Have been contemplating for awhile getting a gps. I read online comparisons but am looking for real world experience. Whos got what and what seems to work the best? I hear some will take you on your route even if there is delays where others will steer you around them? I also saw one that tells you what the speed limit is where you are at, kinda cool but not a necessity. Whats the most usefull, easy to use unit or brand you have or have used?

I have the Garmin 1450LMT. I love it. Its a little more pricey but it comes with lifetime traffic and map updates which is nice. The lifetime traffic helps because you don't have to pay a subscription for the traffic service. It tells you how much of a delay there is and you can choose to go around it or just stay on your original path. It automatically adjusts your path around traffic though. It also tells you what the speed limit is and if you are going over.

If you just want one to use inside the car, I have a cheapo with VERY nice software on it for 50 bucks. Only problem is the battery doesn't last real long once unplugged, so I always kept it plugged in.

I have an older Gamin Nuvi I've been using for 3 or 4 years now and I've been very happy with it. Like Korndogg said, whatever you decide on, make sure it has at least lifetime map updates. That makes life much easier. If you have to buy the map updates they charge like $60/year.

I got a NUVI 1390T when it was the best one out there (April 2009). Anything NUVI line is great. The traffic is great. I would suggest lifetime maps as suggested previously. Also note you can download maps on a SIM card for travel in other areas. I went to France in 2009 and that's why I bought it to begin with. It works great overseas as well.

Took it on the Woodward Dream Cruise in 2009 as well. I got the full benefit of the Traffic option. Took me around stopped Chicago traffic right off the skyway and saved me about 90 minutes of B.S. in IL, which is almost invaluable.

The LMT is something I would opt for had it been available when I got mine.

And what they don't tell you is there are a few map updates a year. With the lifetime maps you can update four times per year for the life of the unit. Hands down its the smartest move you could make. If you do a google search you can find lifetime map deal cheap. I think I got mine for 80 bucks instead of 120+ thru Garmin. :)

This i was gonna say if you have a Droid phone. Just use the google nav. Its WAY quicker then any GPS i have used garmin, tom tom etc. Also i find it to keep up to date better in terms where you are on the road then other GPS.

Cheapo Garmin from walmart worked very well. Except when there are heavy clouds; then no GPS works.

I think Magellan's have the speed limit icon.

Most Garmins have the speed limit, I have a 1300, but my buddies old computer monitor looking Garmin has the speed limit. Their website is pretty cool for downloads, some of it cost money tho..

I'd recommend GPS most definitely, I don't know many places I found by just searching for them in the GPS itself... Taco Bell? Input. 0.7 miles, oh yea burritos here I come.

Appreciate it, but think I may go with a new one so I can get a warranty and map updates...
Sounds like Garmin is the way to go!

Solution for the alpha-numeric problem is just write it out like a normal address. If the address is S69 W12345 Jabrony drive, just write it as 12345 W Jabrony drive.

Garmin's worth it man.

And the only problem I have is that I panic when I leave it at home or the battery dies and I don't have the charger... It spoils the hell out of me.

I have a Garmin 1300 Nuvi and its the biggest pile of crap in my truck.

It shuts down and reloads 7 to 8 times during a 250+ mile work runs. Screen has to be recalibrated once a week. Now it has burn pixels and white lines at the top of the screen. This is after the latest download and firmware update.

Garmin= waste of money, maybe a TOMTOM would have been better.
