New update !!

Statement as of 8:20 PM CST on January 30, 2011

... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 PM Monday to
3 PM CST Tuesday...
... Blizzard watch remains in effect from Tuesday afternoon
through Wednesday afternoon...

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 PM Monday to
3 PM CST Tuesday. A blizzard watch remains in effect from Tuesday
afternoon through Wednesday afternoon.

* Timing... lake effect snow potential and system snows increase
Monday afternoon into Monday Night. Lake effect potential
continues Tuesday... with another stronger low arriving later
Tuesday through at least early Wednesday afternoon.

* Snow accumulations... 4 to 7 inches of accumulation Monday
afternoon into Tuesday. Additional 15 to 21 inches Tuesday
night into Wednesday with storm totals around 2 feet in some
areas.

* Winds... northeast winds 15 to 30 mph Tuesday and Tuesday night
gradually shift north Wednesday. Gusts of 40 to 60 mph with
highest winds in open areas and near Lake Michigan.

* Impacts... reduced visibilities to 1/4 mile or less at times
due to snow and blowing snow... resulting in treacherous travel
conditions. Worst conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday when
near zero whiteout conditions and drifts of 5 to 10 feet
possible. Potential for paralyzing blizzard.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.

A blizzard watch means there is a potential for falling and/or
blowing snow with strong winds and extremely poor visibilities.
This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very
dangerous.

All of mine are skeptical, to be fair we only have an inch or two on the ground here in Chicago. Though the worst is yet to come and its windy as shit outside right now, 35 mph av and excess of 40 gusts, doesn't help that I'm a block from the lake either (can't wait to see the 18 foot waves).

i do. i'm not gonna be mad if we get snow.

i'm just saying as usually they build this all up and then as the days progress they keep lowering the totals.

i'll say we get snow, but it'll be about half as much as the projected 24" totals they were saying for some areas

i do agree that the WIND will be the problem, not the snow totals

meh...the storms that seem hit or miss are always the ones where the temp is just around that point where it's either rain or snow or are we are close enough to the northern/southern edge of the storm as it moves through. This one the temp seems right, there is little chance of it missing us, so I'm more inclined to think it'll be worse than better.

Though, being a lake effect type snow, I am curious as to how far out the effect will be...with high winds, I guess it could carry far.

I'm excited to see the waves come in...18ft waves?!? That's got to be serious winds!

Though how paralyzing the snow will be, I don't know....I already see plows in the neighborhoods clearing the streets, so they're keeping caught up. If the there is a chance for them to get behind, it's tonight.

Governor Walker Declares a State of
Emergency for Winter Storm and Blizzard as Precautionary Measure

Governor Scott Walker has declared a State of Emergency for 29 counties
as a major winter storm continues to impact Wisconsin.

"The heavy snow, falling temperatures and anticipated blizzard will cause
dangerous drifting and blowing snow as well as limited visibility on roads and
highways. These factors will cause treacherous driving conditions," said
Governor Walker. "As a precautionary measure, I want to make sure all state
resources are ready and available if needed."

The counties named in the State of Emergency are Adams, Calumet, Columbia,
Crawford, Dane, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Grant, Green, Green Lake, Iowa, Jefferson,
Juneau, Kenosha, Kewaunee, Lafayette, Manitowoc, Marquette, Milwaukee, Ozaukee,
Racine, Richland, Rock, Sauk, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington, Waukesha, and
Winnebago Counties. These are the counties that are currently under a winter
storm or blizzard warning.

The Governor's State of Emergency calls to active duty elements of the
Wisconsin National Guard as deemed necessary by Brigadier General Don Dunbar to
assist local authorities if needed. The declaration also directs all state
agencies to assist in any response or recovery efforts.

Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) has been monitoring this storm system.
The State of Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will elevate to Level 3
activation at noon today. Staff from WEM, Wisconsin National Guard, State
Patrol, Department of Transportation and the National Weather Service will be in
the EOC. The state is working closely with local officials to monitor the road
conditions and if warrant, actions could be taken to close roadways or portions
of the interstate if necessary.

They completely shut down LSD earlier because a bus spun out at blocked most of the lanes of traffic, plus parts of it by the lake were also getting hit because of the waves. Funny part is Sheridan road (which LSD turns off to) at the southern part of Evanston got closed too, which means if you have to get anywhere from northern Cook county to dt, your sol unless you side street it. These 60 mph gusts are insane, I saw a lady slip and she got carried by the wind a good few feet before she caught herself.

I looked out my front door and I couldn't see out of it due to the mini-Matterhorn in front of it. I estimate it's height to be between seven and eight feet. I've got a drift in my back yard that looks like it might come up to the bottom of my balcony. Three solid feet of snow down the length of my drive. I ain't going ANYWHERE until my plow guy comes.
