I occasionally get calls from people looking for an inexpensive (sub $400) notebook PC. For the most part, everything under $400 are netbooks (or Celeron processor-based) these days, however, one of my suppliers has some 14" Dell Lattitude D620s. They have 14" WXGA display, Intel Core2Duo T5600 1.83GHz Processor, 1GB DDR2, 60GB 5400RPM Hard Drive, DVD/CDRW Drive, 56K Modem, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, 802.11A/B/G WiFi, 6-Cell Battery, Intel Extreme Graphics, XP Professional 32-bit. They're 3rd Party (not factory) recertified with a 90-Day Warranty. $299 shipped to your door. I don't have any here locally yet but if there's significant interest I may pull one in for demo purposes. The hard drive and memory can be upgraded if you want a little more oomph.

I think my wife even had one of these... yes, they are commonly used for large enterprise/government deployments. There is group-buy potential here too.

do they have / can they have microsoft home and student 2010? My wife needs that for her classes at school, namely she needs Word with APA format.

Yes, they do have a serial port. Most legacy and even some modern ECU interface devices, tuners, widebands, dyno interfaces, etc... you name it connect via DB9 serial and not USB. More and more stuff is moving to USB, but there's still an awful lot that needs a serial port.

Yes, they can run MS Office Home and Student 2010. Though they do not include it.

I am an authorized Microsoft Academic dealer so provided she has proof of enrollment I should be able to get her the academic pricing.
