I really thought that I was going to take this bike down to its frame and have that powder coated too but man this might just be more than I am willing to do on my own.

I have a few new things on order to go on:

K6 1000 fork legs
K4 750 oem rear shock
Custom seat cover from customcoversuk
New strator case cover? Think thats it. left side of motor

Then its time to do the rest:

Powder coat rear subframe gloss black
Powder coat swingarm gloss black
Paint calipers bright red
Powder coat wheels two tone (replacing paint job)

Want to get some new things once money lines back up again after those purchases. And I know exactly where to go for most of them.

Levers
headlight
upper fairing brace
Braided steel brake lines
Figure out something new for rear light assembly
akra exhaust

Really want rear sets but damn expensive

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/ShoUrGlow/IMAG0065.jpg

started to look at the front forks and see whats needed to drop them out. Noticed the space at top and measured at 15.2mm fork above triple tree there. It was lowered by previous owners and didnt even know it.

now all that is left to do is get that swingarm out of there. Dont want to mess with that chain as its new but I guess that has to happen. Kinda wanted a red one to match the theme and guess thats the way I go now but truly dont want to open up that case where those clutch adjustments are.......been there done that. Got it right and dont want shit to get off again LOL

Like I always do took lots of pictures along the way for my own good to make sure I dont forget where something goes as this is my first time doing this type of job.

was trying hard to sell it. Then it didnt sell. Saw a statement dude made online "I have not once tested the limits of my bike but it routinely tests mine" and I knew that statement mirrored me and it was NOT time to get a bigger or different bike.

Soooooo.....turn some internet research and some tips from other owners and a bike I already own with no financing involved I can make it kinda trick with relative low cost.

wheels will go to hppowdercoating to get two tone work done and then hopefully find someone local who can pinstripe the red stripe back on them for me versus the vinyl stuff I used on my painted ones. My paint job came out great but its not the shade I wanted but these are for sure

I don't know what levers you were looking into getting, but if you wanted something like asv, pazzo, or crg, you can save yourself some money if you don't mind buying from overseas. On ebay there is a seller named the2wheels that sells levers for $40 shipped for both clutch and brake. I bought these for my 600rr recently and they are awesome. A bunch of guys did a comparison of these to pazzo and they are extremely similar, at a fraction of the cost.

Other than that, I am also looking forward to seeing pictures of it done. Looks like you are off to a great start.

Kelley, really all that's left is popping the triple choke off the frame and dropping the motor, 10 more bolts and the frame could be powder coated. You get the frame out and media blasted, I'll powdercoat it gloss black for you for cost

Man, the thing that worries me the most is all of that wiring and making sure it goes back in the right spot whether runs along left side or right side of the frame and such.

I would absolutely hate to get it this far broken down and not do the frame. I am taking the yokes off to powder coat already so there it would sit just the frame, motor, tank. Seems sooo far to go and not finish it.

Maybe I'll just go label nuts with it and document the shit out of it like I have in past and just jump in and see what happens.

How satisfying would it be to go that far and have it come out in one piece with absolutely no experience at all doing so before......... That alone is kinda motivating me to push forward

Just do it! Take a ton of pictures, then you'll know how it goes back together...

I have a service manual on PDF for that if you need it.
Also, I'd recommend doing a matte or semi-gloss black for the frame and swingarm. It'll look more "factory" that way.

I didnt get exactly where I wanted today because the bike was a bit much to control on my own. I had a few set backs in how I wanted it to go. First, I was wrenching on the shock bolts and the front forks came off the stand. Guess I was pushing on the frame a little too much with my body. Luckily I had prepared for something like that and I had wood blocks underneath the header to keep from smashing to the ground. All I had to do then was wrestle with the weight to get it set back on the jack stands evenly again and I used my floor jack to get it back up again but just couldnt get it on the stands so I set the fork legs on wood blocks.

Next, the overall weight was just a lot to deal with alone to try to get the motor out of there having never done it before. So now I'll have a buddy come over and help drop that motor out.

The stang is close to being sold and that will help give me some space to wrangle with it there too

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v518/ShoUrGlow/SRAD%20Build%20Up/IMG_1922.jpg

did some labeling of various components I was taking off so knew where they went back to. I also took a TON of random pictures to know where little stuff will go again.

Wow, what an undertaking!!! I betcha it's going to be the nicest SRAD around when you're done with it. I'd consider GsxrBots idea of going with a matte or semi-gloss black for the frame and swing arm, like the newer bikes have.

Keep us updated with pictures!

THIS!!!! Do them gold, grey, or black. (I vote gold.) Red is way to ricer. There is nothing red on they bike, red draws way too much attention to stock brakes.

they are faded black now. I have red chain for it and all the graphics are pinstriped in red so was thinking about red but in photoshop they are very eye catching which isnt working for me either. Didnt want to do just black.

Thought hard about gold but that would make me take the fairings to black also and go after a black and gold theme but I want to keep the stock fairing colors for now.

I took it completely down and off the forks and off the bike but didnt take a picture of that part off completely. This is the only image I have of what Im talking about. Want to send the upper and lower triple off to powder coat also so wanted to take down as far as possible.

okay cool. I didnt realize that last pic had it in there but its by the swingarm.

Im sooo jazzed to have gotten this far!

I got the wheels today. Should I clean the powder coat off the hub on the front wheel where the rotors contact the wheel???

I was going to go after a dual color but I decided I liked to go back to a bright white wheel even more with the theme Im going for.

SSScottSS

They sure do look nice freshly coated don't they. That's a good question regarding the coating where the rotors bolt up. If the coating is a uniform thickness and it's not too thick I wouldn't think it would be a problem. I would be concerned in taking it off that you might actually disfigure the mating surface and cause the rotor to wobble.

If I were you, which is easy to say because I'm not doing all the work, I would try leaving the coating on as is.

Where did you get them done? I'm been considering getting my rear sets done in black to match my frame.

MoCkiN U

well rotors, wheels, hub, new headlight, brake lines, new hardware kit, rear shock, seat cover, forks are all here. waiting on chain, rear sprocket, levers, grips, mirrors, windscreen, fairing brace to get here this week and then I can start to put it back together.

Only thing left is frame and that will be done in next couple weeks.

My goal is to have it out in march for the first ride and then get it up to moons to have it tuned.

MoCkiN U
02-24-2011, 11:01 PM
slow progress. Have tons of parts arriving and getting really anxious to get jamming on it. The new headlight went in smooth and the powdercoating on the rotors and wheels are turning out nice. I went a little cheap and painted the hub versus powdercoat cause didnt want to pull that expensive ass bearing in there that looked perfect

All that is left for these is for bearings and dust seals to arrive

got the forks drying with heat on them now. Tried to find various fork combos but wanted black shell. Couple guys online suggested just rebuilding the oem ones and then epoxy painting them for durability so I did. Shop here in town rebuilt the forks and I took care of painting with a local guy at my work helping. Never done epoxy before but thats some nasty shit to get off ya.

The headers are bolted up and repainted those with hitemp black. They were fading and chipping and as pork knows always bugged me. Thats taken care of now.

Until I get the bearings all I can do is let the forks setup for 24 hours, mock up the 954 tail light with the rear cowl on, paint the calipers black, put the new brake lines, levers on it and then wait........

okay had a set back. I got some feedback from a fellow online member of another board. I had no complaints of the bike suspension cause I really am still learning it BUT i wanted black shocks to match the frame. He suggested epoxy paint......in hind sight the shocks are annodized not painted but I didnt think it through and once the paint cured I slid them through the forks and OF COURSE.......it scratched to shit.

Ebay searches, paypal info entered a gsxr 1000 forks are on their way so I can then put the front end together. hopefully they come quickly. The only thing I will have to buy then will be the chain.

Got the Honda 954 tail light mocked up on it with a tray mounted in rear to hold it. I have a race undertail coming to fill the gap so that stuff wont be seen underneath and will be clean. Got the radiator and hoses routed today with resovoir bolted up. Add coolant and change the oil and put new plugs in it and pretty much ready to bolt the gas tank down and fire it up. Will wait to get the front end together. With the problem and the front shocks I have K4 1000 shocks coming on Friday so that will be tits and bearings will be here tomorrow so thats going to be sweet to get it into a roller.

Get the airbox coming in and think will be golden

Im one stubborn S.O.B and unfortunately for me I am not very patient at all so instead of wait for a buddy to help me put the swingarm in I did it myself. First time went smooth as butta......looked around for a nut for the bolt to the caliper support link or whatever that is under the swingarm and saw the damn spacer in the bearing for the swingarm sitting on the work bench. Okay!! CRAP!!

Now took it off and of course if fought me the whole damn way back on and I didnt realize the swingarm was resting against the headers and on the right side has a nice vertical scratch in the powdercoat. Guess I gotta find a nice little sticker to cover that shit up.....AGGH!

Oh well. Its just about 2am and I didnt get as far as I wanted with the body of it but electrically its all cleaned up and ready to go and once I put coolant back in, add fuel to gas tank and change the oil it should fire right up.

Tomorrow I will have it completely done with exception to the chain, muffler, new caliperss in front, and front fender.

one last shot to be a picture whore before it goes into a completely different cleaned it up thread or similar or hell maybe its just time to ride it.

The pads will be here tomorrow and have tracking on those. Sat it on the stand and let it idle for a while to get up to temp to make sure the fan came on, no leaks, no codes, no funny sounds.

Had a small leak from the coolant reserve tank but a small hose clamp will fix that. Put new signals and mirrors on it friday and off for a ride when its all sunny out

Its less about the stang and all about the bike here. Just had to pull it out of the garage to get to the bike after a long overhaul this winter.
