Does anyone know if they will come out to your house to check on why your bill is so high? $300 bucks for December seems a little bit steap!!

I believe you can get them to come out for a energy checkup

Call to tell them you suspect a gas leak and go from there. They will not charge you for the inspection.....

Before I utilized the "budget billing" option, I would have a larger bill in December. When I looked into it more, there is a longer billing range, but obviously it's a colder month too. I like the "budget billing" option. Sure I pay more in summer, but it makes a nice credit amount that covers the higher energy use in winter. No surprises like last winter!

I will trade your 300 for my 700, they will come out, and inspect but I will tell you now they are right

Correct in charging him what they did but that does not mean a leak does not exist.....

300 doesn't seem unreasonable. Gas prices went up in December and we had several days where the high temp was 0 or below.

My Ace Hardware is a Sun Heat infrared heater dealer. We have had great luck with these units. Several of our employees have purchased them and after a few months of heating/electric bill comparisons, they say they are saving quite a bit of money. They heat up to 1000 sq ft, don't dry out the air, and are nearly silent. Very similar to the Eden Pure infrared, but far superior mechanically. You should check them out, I am considering purchasing one to heat my home, its only 860 sq feet. We have one hooked up in the front of our store right by the entrance, it warms that area up so well that it actually shuts itself off and that entrance door opens about 1000 times a day.

What was your energy use last year December. You can go online at Weener Gs and see the charts. I assume you live in a house as opposed to an apartment. Just to speak of difference in buildings, my last December usage was $290. My new apartment is the same size as the last and both were electric heated. The new one also has more base board heaters than the old one and my bill this month is $190 (last month was $110). Consider also we have sometimes three computers on at the same time and two televisions.

1500 sq ft ranch and on the budget I'm at 160 a month, but last year my last 3 months were almost free due to the credit I had worked up. 300 isn't bad for a cold month in a house

Edit* I keep a 66 / 62 temp, day and night. We also burn in the fireplace 2-3 times a week, not sure if that helps much since its a traditional fireplace.

From November 26th to December 27th we burned 100 gallons of #2. That's like $300. Never had such a high bill and that includes living in dayoop in a much larger house 60 years older.

I bought one of these last year:
http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-TLD100-Thermal-Detector/dp/B001LMTW2S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293762394&sr=8-1

It has helped a ton. Turn all the exhaust fans on and the dryer for about an hour. Then walk around inside with it looking for cold spots.

Wait for a day that is really cold and still outside. Then crank up the furnace (works better with an outside make up air intake for forced air) and go outside and check for leaks.

I've found one of the biggest leaks to be light fixtures. The next biggest is non-sealing exhaust fans. Then bottoms of doors.

I don't think weenergeez is doing the free home energy audits anymore but I usually tell people to look into here:
http://www.focusonenergy.com/Residential/Home-Improvement/

Weenergeez participates and they even offer rebates for new furnaces and shit. So for anyone looking into new mechanicals, might want to peruse the website.

Gas prices are high, December had a lot of cold days, $300 isnt really that high depending on the house and how well it is insulated as others haves said.

As others have said, $300 isn't bad. Lot of factors play into what your bill will be: thermostat settings, insulation in your home or lack there of, efficiency of your furnace and age, gas versus electric appliances, age of appliances, type of water heater and how much hot water you are using, etc. When we installed a 95% AFUE furnace last fall we saw our heating bills drop $85-125 a month. My Dec. gas/electric bill for my small house was $142 with 70/62 thermostat setting. We turn it down anytime we plan to leave the house for more than 2 hours also...common sense will save you money

At my small house, I've never paid more than 200...usually winter is around 180, hoping for less this year, as we've actually been very good about just bundling up and keeping the t-stat down.

I've always shied away from the budget payment plans...I like being able to see an immediate reward for any thriffty use of the t-stat, and "punishment" for poor t-stat discipline. That, plus I like the low bills come spring and fall as a nice side benefit...typically around 60 bucks.

I like the budget payments because that way I know exactly what my bill is going to be no matter what. I also had the option to either pay the difference in one lump sum each year, or just have them adjust my budget bill accordingly. That has worked well, has fluctuated a few bucks here and there, but I know what its going to be for the most part. I just bought my house last year so my savings was pretty depleted for a while. Was nice to be on the budget when the air conditioner fell out the window last summer and cost over $400 to have them come out and fix the damage to the gas meter. Unexpected bills suck when you don't know if your heat bill is going to be $50 or $300. Just my .02

Bills are usually high when the heat is used especially how cold this December has been, turn the heat down in the house to 62 and dress warm!

I have an 1800 sq. foot house built in 1987 with all new windows put in 4 years ago. So far in the Dec-Feb months we average 128 therms($137) per month with the highest month ever being 162 therms ($192). I'm kind of a stickler when it comes to heating. The temp is set at 60 over night, 68 in the morning before work, 62 during the day and then 68 from 4:30 until 11.
