Was thinking of getting a Drill Doctor for sharpening drill bits. Anyone have one, what are your thoughts about it?

I usually give mine to my Machinist buddy. I've seen him put an edge on a drill bit free hand with a grinder that no drill doctor could ever touch!!

One of my former employers had one. I hated using it. Never could get a good edge on any bit.

Back in High School we were taught how to sharp drill bits on a standard wheel, one wheel was rough and the other smooth. This little tool we had was just to but up the drill bit to for pitch and BOOM the bits were perfect !!!

Still to this day I'm so thankful of Cudahy High's metal shop...... best shop around throughout the High School other then Bradley tech

I do all mine by hand. That was our first week's project in tech school.

I've watched people (much smarter than me) use drill doctors with great results. When I said I naver got them to work both guys said I was not following the directions....makes sence since I dont read instructions.

Me too! In metal shop class, the first project was to sharpen a drill bit. My teacher made it a pass-or-fail. It took a few tries, but I eventually got it.

Now, how do you sharpen a brad point bit or one of those Dewalt stepped bits?

If you get the process of it right, the things work great. Consistent tips, easy to set up and use, etc. Now getting the process of it right...well, thats another story. :goof

They work great. They split points perfectly.
