View Full Version : Seatbelt POLL.....

Car Guy

As of late I noticed myself NOT wearing my seatbelt as often as in the past, no idea why. I'm curious how often ya'll wear the one thing that could save your life in a serious crash. With the holidays upon us I thought this is the perfect time to post this thread......:xmas

I walked way from a collision at 65+ on the freeway because of them.

Long before a law (20+ yrs ago) , just after rolling an Internation Scout down a hill and realizing you have no control unbuckeled.

When people try and justify why they dont wear them I dont even try and argue, they have never rolled a Jeep, hit a solid object or been hit by another speeding car.

I don't try and justify it. I just don't. It's a bad habit, I know I should. When the weather is really bad, I've been known to click it.

I dunno.....pick your poison. I forget to wear one, but whatever. I have had people who were easily 60+ lbs overweight, or HEAVY smokers, or heavy drinkers lecture me about the evils of not wearing one.......Truth told, everyone does something that's risky, unhealthy or just plain stupid. You wanna wear one, wear it, if you don't, then don't. I couldn't care less. Calling someone a dumb f*ck for not wearing one kinda seems ridiculous, by the way. You don't know the person, don't presume to know the nature of their intellectual capacity. Whether it's death by car crash or death by burger, we all willingly contribute to our own destruction.

I have an Autistic kid that makes everybody in the car wear one, Everyone on his school bus too. But I'd wear one anyway I like the way they hold you in the seat when you blasting around corners!

i see the results of not wearing your seatbelt all the time. that's why i always wear mine, and don't have a motor(donor)cycle. i would agree that people take risks by smoking/eating unhealthy, that will ultimately lead to early health problems/death. but clicking a seatbelt is much easier than smoking cessation, healthy eating, etc.

Most of the time I wear mine, all the time in my wifes jeep cause it has the loudest dinger I've ever heard. I ride a motorcycle so I could die any day anyways.

I was raised to always wear one. I might leave it off to drive across a parking lot or something like that, but even then it feels weird not wearing one. I usually just put it on out of habit even when it doesn't make sense to.

when I was about 10 I didnt have one on and was thrown into the windshield in an accident. I will never forget that day, I still remember the look on the guy's face just as he hit us then waking up days later in a hospital staring up at the ceiling. My dad had fucked his shoulder up pretty bad reaching out to keep me from going through it and after that we never drove without them again. As a newly licensed driver I managed to break a steering wheel and crack a windshield WHILE wearing my seatbelt so I dont EVER risk not wearing one. 100% seatbelt usage for me and anyone riding with me!

I have seen way too many accidents at work where seatbealts would have saved a life. Usually it isn't the drivers fault as much as it is another vehicle involved.

Always, and if your riding in my car your gonna put it on all the way too, none of this put the shoulder strap behind you crap. I can understand the choices spiel, but eating a burger once (unless you choked on it, then again you can choke on anything) isn't going to kill you. Not wearing a seat belt once could be a whole different story. Then again people that believe in Churchillism usually can't be changed anyway.

My dads friend lost his live do to have one on, if it wasn't on more then likely he would still be alive...................I'm around 60%, and it shouldn't be a law, it should be up to the person.

One of his many isms per say, mostly relating to the fact that he did unhealthy things all of his life (ie smoking) and still lived a pretty long time, therefore others would assume they could do the same, regardless of it being luck.

Sometimes, maybe 50/50. Depends on conditions and where I'm going.

I was in an accident as a kid and wasn't wearing one and because of that I'm alive today. Otherwise I would have ended up with a metal pipe thru my head. But I fell forward into the foot well and the pipe went above me into the seat.

Firm believer that when it's your time, it's your time. But I would NEVER tell someone it was a good idea not to wear one.

When it's as simple as taking 1 SECOND to buckle a seat belt to possibly save me from a lot of pain or death, yes. I'm not perfect, but this is pure basic common sense, not to mention a simple LAW. Good luck trying to get $ you deserve for injuries if the ins. company finds out in the police report you didn't have a belt on. :durr

How many people on the don't buckle up all the time list have been in a bad accident?

my pile of shit escort has those automatic belts. half the time the thing doesnt even slide back and forth when the doors open, but I just slip in behind it then. and they do lock when I hit the brakes hard. More cars should have that auto belt thing... just make it more reliable so it doesnt fail like every single escort that has been or still is on the road

I guess for me, I am one of those people who truly and deeply believe that when it's your time, nothing is going to change it. (Please don't argue with me about this, I WON'T change my mind.) I have known people who have had their lives saved due to wearing one, and those whose lives were saved because they were not wearing one. I forget to put one on, I'm not saying it's the best thing to do, but I'm not going to lecture anyone about wearing it or not wearing it. I feel it's up to the individual. To BigSnailBuick, I totally understand what you're saying, I often do this too, buckling up in my '79, but not in my Daily RS. Why? I have no idea. I'm not anti-belt, just really, really forgetful.

Second nature.

And glad as hell too, because it saved my life twice out of the two terribly bad accidents out of my life. The first being as I was the only one wearing mine, I came out completely unscathed, while both of passengers suffered many injuries but were ok, and the car was totaled front to back. The second time mother nature, bad judgment and drag radials sent me into a median at 40 mph, and would have been bad juju for me if I hadn't been buckled up! Car was semi totaled. So yea, better safe than sorry I say.

No I got stopped for speeding and he asked me if I had my seatbelt on cause he didnt notice so I figured I wasnt going to lie and said I didnt. He ended up just telling me to slow down and didnt give me a ticket because I was honest about the seatbelt. Id rather pay $10 instead of $204

Speeding is a violation of law too. Ever driven over the speed limit!?!?! Speeding has been proven to increase the severity of an accident.

You need to define "bad accident". I have been in two that resulted in stitches. No seat belt in either one. 5 stitches above my eye netted me a check for $10K.

It's a personal decision, government has no business regulating half the shit it sticks it's nose in, let alone seat belts.

Feel free to remove the delicates from yer anus...

I always wear mine unless I'm tooling around in the yard. If I'm doing something stupid then I put it on.

Years ago, I was out in the woods scouting with my Big Dumb Mud Truck one of my friends was riding shotgun. He's a proponent of no seatbelt. Well, we were going across an open prairie at about 3mph according to the GPS (at idle in second gear, the IAC keeps 'er moving) when I ran into a stump that was just high enough to catch the axle tube. Stopped the truck instantly and started climbing over it before I got the clutch. He had his head turned looking out the window at a stuck Jeep in the distance. Hit his head on the doorframe/A-pillar and bruise the shit out of his face. Looked like his girlfriend beat him up for 3 weeks.

A sudden stop at 3mph bruise him pretty bad and broke his glasses... it did nothing to me. Can't imagine what 25mph at 1/2mv^2 would do, let alone 55mph or 70mph.
