Buick 455's aren't visually impressive...but great engines, very light for their displacement.

http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/jalopnik/2009/03/Buick_Nailhead-340px.jpg

Another neat engine to look at, buick nailheads aren't impressive by themselves. But 4 of them?

The older gen 1 chrysler hemi...the whale motor. Probably one of the most beautiful engine ever to grace an engine bay, especially b/w the frame rails of a hot rod. Available with up to 390hp, there was nothing of the late 50's that even approached the 331, 354, and 392's.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3399/3507465026_874f1e7da9.jpg

Perhaps the neatest and most different looking engine of all...mopar's sonoramic intakes were available on B block 361 and 383's, and RB 413's. From 310hp for the lowly 361, to 375hp for the 413, it gave a maximum 450ft-lbs of torque at only 2800rpm. Not shabby for late 50's, early 60's power.

Maybe no race hemi program?
Don't know for sure.Well, the hemi dominated the 64 season....with petty winning the championship easily...but he wouldn't even come back to defend his championship...

Basically it went like this:

It used to be that one needed to build x amount of cars in a certain configuration to homologate the car for a given season. And while Ford AND chrsyler were preparing to do so, Bill France came in and basically changed the rule at the last second...instead of x, one need double, so 2x cars built to meet the homologation standards to allow the cars to race. France knew by doing this, he was eliminating both the SOHC and Hemi's and said as much.

Most of the big name mopar drivers withdrew for the 65 season...some for the whole season, while others cherry-picked races they knew they could compete; mopar simply wouldn't support a race team that year in protest. Some raced, none with hemi's. Petty was one who would come in here and there to compete and win money, but w/ little support.

Ford was okay w/ that...and continued to support racing. And unquestionably, 65 was their most dominate season.

But it led to one of the neater instances...not terribly successful, but neat never-the-less: Petty became a full-time driver for his own drag team.

http://www.nascar.com/dam/assets/101130075109-richard-petty-43-jr-story-top.jpg

http://www.nascar.com/news/101130/retro-racing-maumann-rpetty-1965/index.html

The first car Petty drove was named "Outlawed" in response to France's edict. He also had a bumper sticker: "NASCAR: If you can't outrun 'em, outlaw 'em."

Petty would lose the name though when his first barracuda was involved in a racing accident, and ended up killing an 8 y/o kid in the stands...

When mopar WAS allowed back with the Hemi (thanks in part due to negotiating and ensuring the hemi was available across the board---and thus no longer "just a racing engine"), it was with an exception...while most were transitioning to smaller mid-sized cars, Dodge/Plymouth would have to run full-sized Polara's and Fury's on the superspeedways...and running smaller charger, coronets, and belvedere's on the smaller tracks.

Since Ford wasn't allowed to come with it's SOHC, they then withdrew factory support for that 66 season...but would come back with the more aerodynamic cars to offset the hemi's advantage...which would then set off the aero wars.

As far as restrictor plates, it was the speeds of the cars...the winged mopars were regularly topping speeds of over 200 on the superspeedways, with some speeds for these guys hitting 220+. So in 71, a max displacement rule of 358ci was passed, and larger engines (which was pretty much all of them) had to run restrictor plates...up until 74, when big blocks were effectively banned from nascar.

Those were the days of Nascar racing imo...both 65 and 66 seasons suffered because while the fans loved the drivers, they also loved and cared about the cars that were racing. They loved the battle of Ford vs Mopar vs Chevy, olds pontiac, etc...

And it was because of this kind of racing that we have hemi's, rat engines (derived from the mystery motor), and sohc engines...their inclusion into drag racing was simply incidental to what was happening at nascar. (Interestingly, older engines such as the 406/427 side-oilers, 413/426 max wedges, 409's were necessitated by the need to compete in drag racing...but soon nascar took over). But, that need to homologate the cars is why Hemi's were available on most every dodge/plymouth made...and available to anyone who ponied up for the typically 850 dollar option.

Hmph...Mickey Thompsons Hemi (hat-tip-Dyno tom):

http://www.cooksrestorations.com/photos/LightweightsCarlisle/picture.php?img=Carlisle 022-600.jpg&show=full

unique thing about these heads were that he designed them for 2" inch intake AND exhaust valves...little small on the intake side, a little bigger on the exhaust side, so leads me to think he was probably looking to supercharge more than anything...required 3 piece pushrods.

obsoleted by the advent of the SOHC engine.

The M/T Ford Hemi was such a killer project. Mickey's experiments with just about everything was amazingly innovative for the time. Cross ram manifolds, piston designs, cylinder heads etc. Everything he touched netted performance gains. His cross ram intake manifold for the 409 is still one of the most sought after manifolds every made for the W motor

I'm liking the coil cooler. How much boost can you run with only 3 main caps holding the crank? Would look good in a 32 high boy though.

Joke! I've always had a soft spot for all the BOP and caddy engines...each w/ very different personalities. If I had to rank in order of desireability:
1. Buick's 455
2. Pontiac 455
3. Caddy's 500
4. Olds 455

That's not to say that I think 4th place is a bad deal...not on this list. Some might point to the dearth of aftermarket parts for buicks (not non-existent, but very few vendors) as a detriment...heck, I'd have as easy a time getting AL heads for the caddy, for cheaper mind you, than I would the buick! In terms of overall tractability and moderate cost aftermarket support, pontiac is clearly the best.

Had an old 69 bonneville w/ the 10.25:1 compression 455...the original owner necked it down to a single 2.25 exhaust. Once opened up with proper duals and a good tune, it was a beast. That was until we discovered it's oiling short-comings :(

Ohio George Montgomery is one of drag racing's Gasser Gods. He was a driving force in the class from its earliest days right up until it moved back toward the realm of the Competition Eliminator sportsman ranks in the early 1970s. His introduction of late model body styles is blamed by many for the class's fall from prominence, but in reality, it was the only evolutionary step left for gassers. On display here at the Holley NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion, is his 1969 Mustang featuring a twin turbocharged Boss 429 engine, it is amazing.

In talking to George, we learned that the car ran its best passes in the 8.40 range, but at a blazing 174-175 mph. He said that sorting out the turbos, mechanical fuel injection, and chassis was a multi-year project that ultimately payed off when he won the Gatornationals two years in a row (1973/1974).

He did not tell us how much power the engine made, but he did say that in order for it to finally be drivable on the track he had to remove more than 400 hp off of the top. By running smaller fuel nozzles and shrinking the port size in the heads, thereby increasing velocity, he had a car that was capable of being driven.

The car ran with a number of different engine combos over the years, but it is this one that's most impressive, especially considering that it was done in the early 1970s and actually made to work. Lots of these type of projects got started then and were eventually shelved because they were never sorted. Montgomery was (and still is) an extremely adept mechanic and engine builder whose ability in those two areas often seemed to be overshadowed by his on track accomplishments. Te fact that this car was made to work, and actually won on a large stage is a testament to his dedication and skill.

That's a quick look at one of the coolest door slammers and really a car that is the grand-daddy of the modern turbo Pro Mod.

Very unusual to see an aftermarket AL headed mopar in those days...not nearly the selection of heads available then that one has now. Not to say there was a dearth of them...mopar performance had a few, and of course, B1 were some of the fav's.

What were the specs on that engine? Was that a stock stroke 440? I recall it was rare up until the mid/later 90's to see stroker mopar engines.

The only aluminum "B" heads at the time I built that engine were the B1 Heads like mine, MP Stage VI, Indy 440-1 and possibly the B1 "No BS" heads.

My engine specs were as follows: It displaced 511 inches. 4.375 bore x 4.25 stroke. The crank was a welded stroker done by Chrome-A-Shaft, internally balanced, counter weights were knife-edged and the journals were hard-chromed. Rods were Child's and Albert's 426 forgings, 7.043" long. Pistons were horizontally gas ported Arias flat-tops and due to the 68cc chambers still made 12.9:1 compression. Wrist pins were 1.09" diameter tool steel taper walled. I don't recall the length or outside taper thickness, but the centers were .140" thick. Rings were Speed Pro Hellfire .0625", .0625", .1875" standard tension. Block was a 1974 vintage that was filled with HardBlok and fitted with with Koffel's Billet Aluminum Main Caps (supposed to cushion the mains from detonation) and ARP Head And Main Studs. Oil Pan was built in Fon Du Lac by some guys that used to race a Pro Stock Hemi, I don't recall their names anymore. Oil system was a Milodon dual line with swinging pick-up. Cam was an Isky solid roller, specs were .748 ~ 288° intake, .741 ~ 296° exhaust, 111° LC

Heads were Brodix B1 castings, the kit was purchased from Koffel's Place. The rockers, rocker covers, valves, and intake were all included. Valve sizes were 2.3" Intake , 1.78" exhaust. 68cc Chambers. Push rods were Push Rod Factory .40625" diameter, heavy wall chrome-moly. All valve work, porting, intake and assembly was done by Pete Williams at R&J Performance in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Carb was an 08896 1050 Dominator done by Barry Grant. I dropped that motor in with the stock motor mounts and then trailered the car up to Schneider (CRD) for one of his motor plates and to have him make the headers. Headers were 2.25" X 4.5." The rest of the exhaust was comprised of two 5 ft lengths of 4.5" pipe, 4.5" Flowmaster "Shoot-Out" Mufflers dumped in front of the rear axle.

A little "neat" Nascar history, since we're bringing one-of and prototype/experimental engines:

The DOHC Mopar Hemi:

http://www.highflow.com/data/images/auto/426_Hemi_DOHC_1.jpg

Mopar was ready if Nascar would allow OHC engines, they were ready with this DOHC screamer to answer the ford SOHC 427... with an est. 600ft-lbs of torque, 750+hp as the inset says. Almost wish France wasn't so dye-in-the-wool convinced of sticking to cam in block engines :(
