For probably a year plus we had a empty 50 gal sitting in my living room of our apartment. We were givin the tank and stand for free. I wanted to put a bearded dragon in it but just never did. I always spent money elsewhere and couldnt stomach the money for all the lights needed.

Even pork joked a few times to just look on craigslist and put something in it at least.

Well sunday I finally did. I got a local pet with tank, stand, lights that was ready to go so I bought that for $125 and came home and started to get my setup cleaned out and ready for the new guy.

We put a ceramic tile in the bottom of it with driftwood around and all the neccessary lights are new also. Stocked up on food supplies for him and seems to be going really well.

Had my last Beardie for well over 12yrs, close to a record for captivity I'll dig up the old thread with pics, he was a caracter. My last water dragon was another dinasaur going beyond expected life span, old/fat and pissed at the world till the last day when he fell over grinning.

Edit: here he is, Spike the old azz Beardi:

How old is he, 2-3? Looks like a healthy beardie, I'm sure your daughter is in love with him already.

approx 3. the previous owner took good care of it. handled it a lot as he is easy to handle even with my 3yr old and yeah, she is in love. Its cute to see her stand at the glass "eat the crickets dragon, its right there" in her cute little broken english voice.

Russ, Becky.......

Im all ears if you have any tips or stuff to watch for. He isnt really active. He finds his spot under the light and camps out. He wont even get down to eat. If I put him down on the ground he will eventually go after the crickets or veggies but once done runs back up to his basking spot quite literally and then sits there for hours. Normal behavior?

His basking spot is 96 degrees at its highest point. Have a 150 watt basking bulb will probably go to 160 and see if that gets a touch higher. Have reptiglo 5.0 in it now with reptisun 10.0 flourescent coming.

He was under a heat source but no UV light of any kind at previous home. They were dusting crickets which okay I guess but now he is under light even if lower then needed for a few days till other bulb comes in.

Cooler side of the setup is 78/80 depending on where measured so not exactly what I want either there.

I have 3 dozen crickets right now and feeding only once a day which seems to be eating 6 of them and then the next day eats berries and romaine lettuce. I also have that supplement stuff which was like $4. I keep forgetting to put that with the veggie part. I am not dusting the crickets nor using gut loader. I simply got the container to hold the crickets in and toss in a apple peel or piece of lettuce the day before feeding.

I am no expert but have been reading on www.mybeardie.com a lot so would love some advice from more seasoned owners.

Also gave his first bath yesterday. Lesson learned!! Will get a tuperware thing to give him a bath in. I wasnt expecting him to poop in my sink but he did enjoy it for the long time he was in there all puffed up like a balloon swimming around with his tail

Dont dismiss not being active to being unhappy, he/she may just be very content. I would often act like I was going to handle mine, totaly pissed off he would inflate his body with mouth agape hissing and trwitching. This was my way of forcing him to excersize against his will. Good quality vitimins on watered lettuce would make mine turn into a kid on soda other times. Fresh veggies, vitamines and crickets now and again, mine took mice when he was younger but never crazy about them.

As he is full grown, he doesnt need crickets every day, maybe why he doesnt run for them when they're in. 3 times a week is plenty. We dust our crickets for the calcium. They also love super worms or meal worms as a treat a couple at a time once or twice a week. They like lettuce, carrots and LOVE strawberries. We have a pretty good size piece of driftwood to climb up on, they get damn near the top of the cage and a few pieces of slate at the bottom to lie on or dig around.

I have a beardie. He isn't as friendly as they are supposed to be, but his attitude makes him who he is. You can handle him for a while but when he starts getting restless you might get bit lol. I got him off craigslist as an adult and have had him for at least 3 years so I don't know how old he is, but he is more than double that ones size. Mine will eat romaine lettuce but barely,(thats all previous owners fed him) he might eat 1 or 2 pellets if you hand feed them but thats it, he likes crickets, but his favorite is super worms. He will eat as many as you put in there.
