View Full Version : From butt-ugly...to maybe not horrid? CompASS related...

Spy shots of the new compass were posted on autoblog...as I mentioned, the compass is a mis-mash of a car. The front doesn't match the back...the front is ugly, the rear, not horrid. I've always held that the compass would have been far less ugly had they simply emulated the simple front end of the 99-04 grand cherokee.

Well, it appears that the Jeep design team FINALLY started to listen to me :goof

The Jeep Compass is going from this:

To this:

It is as I posted in mopar rumor threads before...they're moving to emmulate the grand cherokee.

It might not be the greatest looking thing in the world still...but dear God what an improvement if it only registers as "not horrid" in one's mind. Heck, it would be off to say the new compass will look almost "decent"

Now...if I could just get them to listen to me about the CVT's

I hope they did something with the powertrain, holy crap is that thing anemic. I also want to go to a Jeep dealer and ask them if I can get a trail rated Compass :rolf.

I hope they did something with the powertrain, holy crap is that thing anemic. I also want to go to a Jeep dealer and ask them if I can get a trail rated Compass :rolf. The engine received mild revisions to improve mileage further...but makes around the same power.

As far as the powertrain, I'd only use "anemic" to describe the CVT auto versions; they are deathly slow...

With the 5 speed, it's actually surprisingly quick. Makes very good low-end power...I frequently shift my Compass 5 speed at around 2000rpm or less, and no matter the gear, it pulls pretty decently away, even in 5th. If I had to estimate, not that I'd ever race mine, but I could probably pull ~ 16.3-16.4-ish at the track, mid/lower 80's. Honestly, it's not bad for an NA AWD box that still nets me upper 20's combined mileage...and one trip to Chicago and back I pulled down 32mpg.

The original powertrain was supposed to feature a dual clutch 6 speed auto which would almost certainly have been quicker and more efficient than the CVT has turned out to be. Getrag filing for bankruptcy left chrysler in a bind in that regard...so sebring/avengers got the 4 speed auto, patriot/caliber/compass ended up w/ CVT's.

That said, I don't worry about the compass not being trailrated...that's what my wrangler's for :thumbsup

Lipstick on a pig. Looks like they put a new front end on a platform that sucked four years ago when it came out. It watered down the brand. Jeep needs to ditch it, bring back the Cherokee classic and offer a diesel variant across their line.

Chrysler should sell Jeep to an automaker that appreciates the brand, not bastardizes them with front wheel drive and v6's.

Looks like total ass. The Cherokee doesn't look much better either. It looks dated to me already. It could have been released 8 years ago and badly in need of a complete redesign.

New Ford Edge looks 2342352623x better than this, no comparison. The Edge also doesn't scream cheap at a passing glance.

And I only drove the CVT Compass so I'll take your word on the 5 speed being peppier. Though I've never been impressed with any vehicle that had a CVT, something about that transmission that saps the life out of a car.

No, unfortunately Chrysler doesn't have anything near as attractive*. ;)

But obviously styling is subjective.

Here's the new official pics.

I'll admit, it's a HUGE improvement. I'd even say I like it a little. The rear fender and rear 1/3 of the vehicle is still awkward to me, but the front 2/3 of it is pretty nice looking. I still think it looks dated (like it could have came out 7 years ago), but definitely an improvement. I think Chrysler is on the right track trying to put a band-aid on all these poor designs (some working better then others. The Avenger and Sebring not so much) until they can start rolling out some good looking products. They are already doing a lot better (as far as sales), so it looks really good for them when they actually have attractive vehicles on the market.
