The impala has served it's life and was time for something new. unfortunately that was a lease and i was like 1000 miles over. So it's not a ton of money, but just sucked going over. Looked at leasing again but in the end, buying made more sense for the mileage that I drive. But a lease on this thing through northshore would have been $314 @ 15k miles/year and 36 months. On a base WRX, the same lease would be like $250-260. That's including tax. Don't drive as much as that, knock $10/month off of it.

So after my complaints in the previous subaru thread, and I appreciate all the recommendations, the "honest" dealerships weren't willing to deal AT ALL on even the base models. Wilde I had a bad experience with and wrote them a letter. Got to the owner/GM who called me and definitely stepped up. About $3500 off MSRP for this thing made it a sweet deal. I didn't want to have them locate something, and the hatch I was looking at sold the day before.

So now you all can call me "mini-beagle" hahaha. First import I've ever owned

Sure is a blast to drive. Not gonna do a damn thing to it, so don't put ideas in my head... PLEASE.. haha. Sound System sucks for sure though.

I've read some bad things about those AP's for the '11 cars. Maybe it was just the one or two guys, but not worth the risk on a brand new car. Plus, it's already got enough HP, haha. I don't want to spend $1000 to get 15 hp. Just not worth it.

15hp? A tune on a Subie is worth a LOT more than 15hp. Those things have the idiot tune in them. No timing, questionable boost control, pig rich.... I hadn't heard anything about the APs on the 11's??

well ok J.. you are the resident subaru expert so i'll take whatever advice you can give when we talk saturday, hahaha.

as for Road America, I think it would be alot of fun out there. Don't know if I'd ever do it, maybe for a touring session one day, but doubtful. Remember I have been on RA quite a bit in the past :) My favorite time was with a '70 1/2 Z28 4-speed car! Nostalgia at it's best!

I love my Legacy but I really want your STI. We have a customer that comes to our shop on the eastside that has the hatch. His car is a blast to drive as your probably is too. I've never got attached to the very large wings these days. They only look good on MK4 Supras and they remind me of a shopping cart. Do they make a flush mount spoiler like the ones for the Evo's. Otherwise very nice Subby. Have fun with it.

From what I understand, unless your have substantial modifications, front mounts will actually hurt the performance vs the factory system.

I need to get a hold of my stepbrother to see what he has in 05+ STi lug pattern rims, but I do believe he's got a set of Rota's. If anyone is interested let me know, though might take a while to get a hold of him.

Maybe on a car making 200 hp. Sure there is some pressure loss throughout the system but the cooling more than makes up for it.

jbiscuit
11-11-2010, 08:21 AM
^ not entirely true. The top mount intercooler is actually a really efficient system. But it has its limits mostly in limited core size and the heat soak that is generated by the engine compartment. Subaru has mastered this system. There is the argument that the stock turbo doesn't "need" the benefit of a front mount. Though there are plenty of Subarus with stock turbos using them with good results. Basically, you don't need to make this a must-do mod...though they sure look good on the new STis!

What is not entirely true about my statement?

On a stock car it works perfectly fine, as i mentioned, what you will not see is a 400whp car running a top mount.

On the other had i had the front mount on my evo heat soaking with the stock turbo and front mount, it was also making 355/370 to the wheels, something else you won't see from a stock subi turbo.

jbiscuit
11-11-2010, 12:46 PM
OK 400whp....that's a bit different. Then yes you would benefit from a front mount. Which also would require a larger turbo...which goes right along with what I said :) Not saying a front mount doesn't have its place....I just think it shouldn't be the first mod on the list

i did ask Tom :) I just knew it would be a never ending cycle. Then I was getting shit from dynotune on a nitrous setup for the car and talking with some of the guys about a progressive controller on it to make it last a bit longer. And you had the Monte and were doing stuff to that and it basically made me realize the rewards for so much work, weren't that great.

Crawlin

what you will not see is a 400whp car running a top mount.

Question... why is this?

Is it just less efficient? Or is it a space constraint type thing that the piping running to the motor needs to be larger diameter to get more air in and through the "engine pump" basically. And it's not worth it to try and fab that up when there is all sorts of aftermarket kits available for a front mount?

I don't know turbo's, I don't know imports, I don't know subie's and I don't know evo's.

I don't know modded imports/subie's and I never will, haha.

I don't know turbo's, I don't know imports, I don't know subie's and I don't know evo's.

I don't know modded imports/subie's and I never will, haha.

Basically just the size and placement of the core is the limiting factor (what was said before). A top mount is limited in size and is less efficient because of the placement. There is not as much direct air movement over the core in that position. If i had to venture a guess, the stock evo core is probably twice the size of the subi, and also is mounted in a location allowing more (and cooler) air to flow over the core.

If you look at all of the 700whp and up cars they will all pretty much be air to water intercoolers. There is so much heat and airflow that an air/air wouldn't effectively transfer heat at that rate.

At the end of the day heat transfer is the name of the game, it all comes down to the area of the intercooler fins and the heat transfer method, weather it be convection(air/air) or conduction (air/water).

And BTW, an evo can make 400 whp on the stock turbo set up properly:goof

Thats a great rule, the question is, can you do it with a car that will pick up 50+ hp with an exhaust and tune?:thumbsup

i wouldnt change the exhaust, just run an electric cutout on the DP for when you need to whoop someone. Stock quiet keeps you out of trouble

Thats not a bad idea, the turbo acts like a muffler of sorts though. i had a 3" turbo back exhaust with a straight through muffler and didn't think it was too bad.

On the other had i had the front mount on my evo heat soaking with the stock turbo and front mount, it was also making 355/370 to the wheels, something else you won't see from a stock subi turbo.

Exactly what I was saying, on a stock turbo STi, I doubt you'd need more than a top mount.

On a sidenote, what kind of millage are you getting so far?

for my driving from Muskego to downtown, which is like 35-65 for city/highway

i'm around 25mpg. that is pretty decent compared to the imp ss which ended up at 18 usually. and that is of course with typical 8-9am morning traffic

Yea just a Intake an a tune Steves car actually picked up 52 whp. Full exhaust Im pretty sure one of my other friends picked up another 20-30 whp. Ill have to check what he picked up for torque. An keep in mind this is on a WRX so an STI should pick up a little more. Id say its worth it to get an intake an a tune. An then if you decide to do exhaust you can have AMS retune it for 250 instead of 450. On my car I noticed a huge difference in spool after I put the downpipe on. Its damn near instant. Id like to get a bigger turbo to get some lag cause the bitch is always in boost lmao :thumbsup

I still miss that car, oh well.

I honestly rarely hit the sprayer button, too busy driving to remember. Could've wired up a vacuum switch, but never felt it improved that much to worry about it.

Have to get wings one day to check it out and to show you my yellow car before I put it away.

Just food for thought.....with just exhaust and a tune our 07 sti nearly hung with my friend's 10 Camaro SS with intake, exhaust, and BADLS1 tune. (started off even...camaro slowly pulled through the gears) STi's love small bolt-ons :)

Yeah I agree my 07 with stage 2 with dyno tune and intake used to walk LS1 cars with bolt ons from a roll.

LET THE FUN BEGIN!!! just ended up buying a set of 18" STI BBS wheels and Nokian winter tires for the same price as just a set of blizzaks on my wheels, so had to jump on that.
