I always thought it was illegal to keep wildlife as pets in Wisconsin.
However someone on CL is telling me different.

Is it not?

kind of depends.. ive known people with raccoons and deer and the dnr was cool with it.

well since they arent native id be willing to be you're ok since it likely wouldnt live in the wild here. think chinchilla or other odd eastern furry critter.

Well alligators are not necessarily native around here, but I imagine it's not really legal to have those either.

In my town, there is an ordinance about exotic (and some hybird) animals.

x2, one my buddies sisters in greenfield raised a baby raccoon and now its like the family pet, never goes away and stays around freely. Pretty cool.

Native and non colectable reptiles I can think off hand:

Timber Rattlesnake
Massasauga Rattlesnake
Queen snake (water snake)
Ornate Box Turtle
Probably Wood turtles by now due to overcollecting.

I know first hand both the MN and WI DNR think highly of Pine Martins...big tree going weasels.

Fennec Foxes are awesome.

But I've never been a fan of people who keep wildlife as pets. No matter how cute/cool you think it is, wildlife should be left wild.

Ha, you should check out "Fatal Attractions" on Animal Planet. Those people get fucked up! Some wildlife like you said should be left in the wild truly. I mean come on, Rattle Snakes?

if that thing has no chance in the wild (no family, safe place etc) i think its better off kept as a pet. I would rather someone take care of it, than "throw it to the wolves"...BUT im not cool with breeding animals like that for pets.

My wife's friend has 2 skunks as pets. She got them when they were babies, had them de-stinked and dyed one stripe pink and the other purple. They act just like cats.
