I need a new laptop but know absolutely NOTHING about the technical side of computers, the best place to buy one, or what to buy. I mainly view websites and watch videos, no gaming what so ever. A good friend of mine who works for MilwPC said ASUS builds a great product for a great price. I am open to any and all suggestions.....:thumbsup

I can tell you not to buy an ACER, not to be confused with ASUS. The Acer we bought about 3 years ago was a piece of shit right out of the box pretty much, within about 2 months it stopped recognizing the DVD drive, replaced the drive, updated the BIOS, rebooted the entire computer only to find out there is some sort of hardware issue. Got absolutely nowhere with their tech/customer support.

We then bought an HP in March of 09 and just had to replace the motherboard. We clean it out regularly and it died about 3 months out of warranty, HP wouldnt do shit to help out even though they have a service bulletin out for the same problem but different models. When I called them they told me the problem was fixed by this model. Yeah, I see that.....

Thats just my 2 cents, for every bad story I'm sure you can find a good one to match.

I would look for:

i5 or i7 CPU
7200 rpm Hard Drive
At least 4GB memory (ram)
Brands: Asus or Lenovo (they make IBM thinkpads)

So: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220827

If your on more of a budget:
5400 rpm HD is ok
i3 or i5 is ok
Brands: Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba

For just web browsing and general stuff have you considered a netbook? Anything else is overkill if that's all its going to be used for. Otherwise if you have the cash to burn and/or need it for more intense things Asus is a good choice.
