View Full Version : Thinking about lowering the Jeep.

Only problem is I've never owned a truck/suv so I have no idea really on what steps need to be taken versus lowering a car. It's only 2wd so I know that's a plus, since 4x4 are harder to lower properly. Any information would help. And maybe some links.

cut the springs, and do a flip kit in the rear :thumbsup

Ya I couldn't find anything. Everything keeps showing up bloody tcase lowering kits.

Things I could think of would be possibly 4cylinder TJ coils and as mentioned a flip kit for the rear. Not sure if I'd cut coils just yet.

Explain a flip kit for me?

The spring sits underneath the axle instead of on top. Flip kit and cut springs would probably be the best unless you bag. Personally wouldn't drop am xj(don't think it would look good) unless it was slammed. My. 02

I actually was tossing around the idea of bagging it. Paging Pork, does suicidedoors have kits?

probably cheaper to build your own kit.Id cut the front springs first, see how it rides. If you dont like it, buy a new set of springs and start over. After you get the front where you want it, drop the rear with a flip kit and run blocks to even it out or rake it.

You can't flip the rear axle.. Jeeps have rear coil springs, not leaf...

Am I gonna look like a slammed Honda bouncing down the road?

Probably...

Don't Eibach make a kit or something? Also, I'd look into shocks...

Wow, looking into it, Eibach don't...

Maybe I'll skip lowering and do a v8 swap. Hahaha.

:rolf:rolf:rolf you would give up the stout 4.0L for a 5.2?...youll make more power and retain reliability by going 4.0L turbo:thumbsup

My silver truck I had DJM Suspension Lower control arms in the front. Shackles and hangers in the rear. If you cut the springs the ride quality will be horrible.

Ride quality won't change much by cutting unless you cut enough to be riding on bump stops, heating coils is what changes the spring rate. Bags will cost you 2 grand and maybe 3 days work for install

Isn't a cardinal sin to lower a jeep. you know the whole "trail ready" motto?

I guess it being a 2wd makes it ok? I still say find out the spring specs and get some used stuff. There's tons of people selling used stock crap on jeepforum. Like I said some stuff off a 4cyl tj may work. Then if you hate it you can put the stockers back in.

Depending on your wheels and tires it may look decent.

If you follow through with lowering it, be sure to adequately stiffen up your struts.

Wrong, the xj has leaf springs in the rear, the grand may have coil in the back but regular has leaf

I just ordered an Eibach pro kit for my 01 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ)

1" in the front and 1.3" in the back. And I got an Adco 1" rear sway bar.

your asking how to lower a typical leaf/coil vehicle, which leads me to beleive you dont possess any fabbing skills.I could be wrong, but im thinking you will go for the easy engine swap, nothing exotic :)

you can do the low-buck hoodrich airbag setup. Pull all the leafs sans the main leaf, and run a "helper" air-over-leaf setup in rear. Make your own cups up front and get some 6" bags. You could do the ghetto bags for less than 2k, but probably have a small air tank, small lines, smalle valves, and a small compressor. f/b only, but it would work.
