So I have a factory trunk organizer in my Vic. It really is a nice addition but it is not covered so I can't put big items in my trunk without risking damage to the organizer or having to remove it from my car. What I would like to do is build a false floor that would lay over the top of the organizer that is hinged for quick access to the items stowed in the organizer. Here is a pic of the organizer. I was thinking using Either plywood or MDF and cover it with the carpet used for speaker boxes. I am not really sure how to incorporate the hinged covers. Here is a pic of the organizer. Anyone have any ideas or have the right tools to cut this out correctly.

You have the idea right which you could do in a afternoon. As far as hinging I would use a stainless piano hinge. Looks like there is enough room at the head of the storage area for it. I don't think the spare tire will bother your hinge angle.

Yeah that sounds good. My biggest issue is the full size spare which hangs over the ledge and prevent any type of hinged cover from being able to be opened and left open if I needed it to be. So I don't know if 2 smaller covers that open up to the sides would work better or even like a folding cover of some sort if I get extra hinges.

Build it so it opens out to the sides similar to an OEM Marauder trunk box, sorta like this:

Yeah, I will probably do it like the OEM Marauder organizer. Just gotta be sure it gets cut to the right size so it clears the spare tire.

Gotta hold off until payday to go out and buy the supplies. Should be quick once I do that. Steve and I were also talking and thinking about going out to Al's and buying another trunk carpet out of a wrecked Crown Vic and use some sections of that to cover the false floor. That way it 'Should' match perfectly. I just don't know for sure if it will work yet.

I don't want to sound out of line here.. but are the hinges really necessary? Why not make one solid piece than you can put it and remove whenever you want? much simpler, cheaper, and probably easier to use in the long run.

Make it out of cardboard, trace that out on mdf, cut it out, put a thumb hole in it to pull it out? Wouldn't be heavy.. Similar to the "false floor" that covers the spare tire in SN95 cars..

Yeah that's true too. Most likely I would never take it out anyway. I guess I wanted the hinges so that I don't need to unload the Whole trunk if I need to get underneath to the organizer. I could just slide everything off to one side as needed.

I'd use removable pieces of tempered Masonite.

I don't really know what the difference is? I went and googled tempered masonite and it just gave really vague descriptions. Probably not looking under the right thing.

Tempered Masonite is super hard and only a quarter inch thick. In other words, it shouldn't sag like regular Masonite as well as being lighter and thinner than MDF. Tempered Masonite is the stuff that's hard to get a nail to go through. It is also the same stuff that they used to put in the trunks of cars... just brown instead of black.

Something like this may work well also.
