So I picked up the new heart of my '66 to replace my 355.
2003 LQ4 from a silverado pickup, will eventually be backed with a 4l80

a 454 would have been a better choice....to each his own. i don't like new gen chevy motors in old school stuff.

A 572 wouldn't be bad either :)

If I only wanted to drive it a few miles at a time, I would have done a big block/th400. IF I were to go with a bigblock, I'd want to go much bigger than a 454.

I chose to go with this drivetrain for a couple reasons. If your gonna go genIII, the 6.0 is pretty good bang for your buck, and its potential is extremely high. Injection also gets the added bonus of better mpg and a "smoother" motor. Plus I HAD to have an overdrive trans, it was a requirement since the setup of my project. Ill be running the 4l80.
Another important factor was that I didn't want to tear into and "build" the engine yet. I wanted to take out my good running 355, and replace it with my good running 366, I'll build it when it blows up down the road.

Good kill...while I too tend to favor older stuff from a budget, and many cases performance standpoint, for what you're going for, what you have is hard to beat.

Think about it...the 300hp that was equipped with is a net rating...so using old "gross" figures you can estimate around 360hp or so, maybe add another 15-20 for headers and less engine accessories to drive. Coupled w/ fuel injection and eventually an OD trans and the relatively light weight of it all, does one really think they'll get a 380hp small block that idles as smooth, drives as easily, and will probably return 20++mpg on the road using the tradition SBC or BBC? I mean, 380hp easy with a bbc...but to get all that? Not quite as easy (but not impossible either).

It's not like you're truck is a rare model or anything either...like putting an LS engine in a Yenko nova or something.

Question...have you ever run your truck at the track to see what the mild 355 turns?

The 6.0 will also get a new cam setup, and a set of headers (for the swap). My plan is to get it in and running sound, and plan to spray it a bit down the road (any cam suggestions?)

I havn't taken it down the track myself, the truck has been in some sort of taken apart state for a while. The PO took it to gld a couple times, showed me a couple slips. Leaving off the foot brake it ran a 14.7 was his best. The truck has a high end friendly cam, but it has a weird hesitation at the top of 3rd which hurts you running wide out.
355, scat crank, 202 heads mild port, weieand sportsman intake and a holly 670.
