Looking to find interchange info about the pontiac and chev 2.2 ltr. Are they the same motor? Same question on wheels between the two. I found a mechanical basket case 2002 Sunfire GT that I would like to fix for my daughters 1st car. But.... It needs a motor and possibly different wheels if the price is right.

I posted in the wanted section too.

Yes the GM 2.2L is the same between the Sunfire and Cavalier in corresponding years.

Your talking GM here, almost every engine is in another make/model within GM with little to no, or better engine specs... Come on!

I don't know if OP knows this but that is the Ecotec 2.2 I think 2000 and earlier years with the 2.2 is a different motor. Don't quote me but I'm almost positive.

I think that was the first year for the ecotec motor. Should interchange with multiple years. Wheels should interchange with all other j-body cars (cavalier sunfire sunbird etc)

You could be right. I had a friend with an 02 Cavalier with the Eco 2.2, Sunfires might have been different.

I think you were right. I thought I read 2000 not 2002. Thus my edit

2002 was the last year for SFI 2.2L and the first year for ECOtec 2.2L in both the Cavalier and Sunfire.....

Next question... Do the transmissions match between a 2.2 and a 2.4? I learned that some of the GT's had the 2.4 ltr. I can't tell because the top cover of the motor is removed. Is there a vin code that will tell me?

Snap a pic if you can. I can prob tell by looking.

An easy way to tell is where the oil filter is. If it's on the front of the engine, it's a 2.4L. If its on the back of the engine on the passenger side, it's a 2.2L.

Unless it's a 2.2 ecoi then the filter is in the front!
I am willing to make an educated guess to tell you you have a 2.4 in that GT;)

In the front, on the top (cartridge style filter) for the Ecotec.

And yes, having a 2.4L is normally what seperated a Z24 and GT from the other models...

Yeah if its a GT and 2002 its one of those weird times where mid way through the year they switched to ECOtec L61's from the 2.4L LD9. Its very obvious to me anyway the physical diff between the engines, they dont look anything like eachother

Thanks for your help with the engine ID's everyone.... The motor is a 2.4 ltr. engine.

I did a bit of investigating and it's my understanding these engines were pretty crappy in the earlier years but improved around '04 with some re-designing. The same engine is used in Grand Am, Alero and Z25 Cavs. Now, I have also been told that these have no tolerance for cold start & drive and fluid levels are very very important to keep full... Now for the fun part.

Need to find one from a late model. I'll edit my wanted ad as well.

2.4 ended its tenur in 02'... All of the quirks were fixed in '96.
