Eesh, I use to live there.

I guess if you stay in the touristy parts you will be OK. Stay away from El Cajon IMO. It's a dump.

hahahahaha Downtown El Cajon I thought was really nice. Downtown Café in El Cajon has good food! The wednesday night car cruise is a lot of fun. The Sycuan casino is nice too. :thumbsup

Disneyland isn't even close to SD lol Plus why would you want to spend an afternoon driving to Disneyland when there is so much to do right there in San Diego? My suggestions:

Point Loma Lighthouse/Cabrillo national monument
La Jolla
El Cajon Wednesday Night Car cruise
Coronado...take the ferry across
Broken Yolk for breakfast
South Beach Bar & Grill in OB for fish tacos
OB pier (shown above)
Filippi's in the Little Italy district for pizza

I realize it's two hours but again why spend 4 hours roundtrip in the car? I'd be too busy sucking down Coronas :)

Few Additions to this...

Drive to Coronado, the bridge is awesome.
Take the Wife on a gondola ride over on coronado, she will like it
Hodads @OB for burgers
Legoland @ Carlsbad if that interests you (25 min drive)
Gaslamp District downtown for dinner and drinks any night of the week.
There is a wale watching tour but its gay as aids.
Senior Pancho's on college ave is pretty much the best mexican food in SD and its dirt cheap.
Effins Pub smack dab in the middle of the SDSU Fraternity/Sorority row is also a damn good time.

The possibilities really are endless. If you run out of stuff to do, your not looking!

^ good suggestions also. We went to Hodads for a burger. Very good ya gotta do a bacon cheeseburger with the bacon patty. The shakes are huge and delicious also. We went on a Tuesday around 9pm and the line was over an hour. Place is small but cool so food suggestion. FYI my recommendation for South Beach bar & grill is across the street on Newport Ave from Hodads...easy to find

Do a bay tour and check out the navy ships. If never been on or near one its really impressive to see the size of them especially if a carrier is in port. There is a little shopping/market and food area called seaport village right there too I think. The boat might be more toward the carrier museum now that I think of it. Over near cruise ships.

i decided to rent a car now snce there is so much to see. we are staying at the sheraton marina. right across from the airport and from cornado. we went waking downtown today. gonna hit up sea world and the zoo. my wife wants to go to la holla. i wanna go now since you guys say the food and beaches are good. we booked a dinner cruise in sa diego bay and are gonna rent some jet skis this weekend. the only part about it i dont like so far is i saw so many homeless people sleeping on harbor dr and all over downtown there are beggars everywhere. kinda weird since i only see a ton of luxury cars around here. i saw a gtr today just parked in downtown. along with a bentley gt. its also weird not seeing many beaters due to the lack of rust. also i dislike al the 2wd prerunner lifted trucks. they are ridiculous to me. plus the fact that everyone drives foreign cars here. never seen so many hybrids.

if never been go to "dicks last resort" in downtown. Its like Ed Debevicks (sp?) in chicago but imo just a touch better. Also look up the show "triple expresso" at horton plaza. Its a comedy play and dont be afraid of those words, its the most entertaining show I have been too before. You will leave laughing and thanking me and others who suggest it later. Its really close to your hotel.

mission beach with the boardwalk is pretty neat hang out too. Its by seaworld when you go there you can watch the sunset at mission beach or lovers lane near there. Ask the locals they can direct you, I cant remember the lookout point exact directions.

Anakonda, true on the homeless being everywhere. The weather is so nice that it's easy to just be on the streets. i remember in Santa Barbara when I lived there, the big fig tree right on HWY 101 was the place where they all hung out. Because I had my own bout of being homeless in California, it's too easy to just let life go by and do nothing for yourself. Thank God I got out of that cycle. but I digress, enjoy your stay in SD. Lots to do and see. I would recommend some surfing lessons as well. North of SD a bit are all kinds of surfing communities and the shops usually have at least one instructor. I think Oceanside was one place I passed through in the 70s and I learned there.

Dicks is alot of fun and the food is pretty good, its downtown in the gaslamp district. easiest way to get there is to take harbor drive down past the convention center and take a left at the water fountain, cant miss it.

ISn't the cave to the ocean in La Jolla? my memory is fuzzy from that trip as a kid but I remember it being inside a brick-a-brack store oceanside and going down to the surf below.

You two going to the zoo and the surrounding attractions? I remember that being excellent

zoo is tomorrow. we have our dinner cruise booked for monday night. might go to seaworld on tues. monday during the day prolly hit up coronado. we are renting our car now and gonna head up to la jolla. didn't get to the jet skis yesterday. had massages in the morning then just chilled by the pool most of the day. i wanna see stuff but at the same time i don't want it to feel like work to get all this stuff in. so trying to juggle in some relaxing nothing time as well. weather is good. i think it's funny the locals think it's hot here. its been like 85 and sunny everyday. but humidity is nothing. at night it gets nice and chilly like mid 60's. its great. however it would get old to me. i like snow too much. i got burnt yesterday by the pool. oh well.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.
