A older dodge truck came into the shop today to have his brakes looked at and when this thing pulled in it made such a sound that made you stop what you are doing and look up like "WTF is wrong with that"

Dude said had a funny sound that was getting worse. Sounded like a playing card in the spoke of a bicycle but all steel and little did I know thats kinda exactly what we found.

The rear of the rotor is completely ground down to the vents........

There should be equal metal on the opposite side there.....not ground to the vents.

Of course we got the "just fix that driver front and I'll drive it home to fix the rest" with this one its either we fix it all or we touch nothing as we werent ready to take on the liability for something that would be let go sooooooo far.

Yikes! Wouldn't that eat the pads pretty quickly?

That is due to no pad left and just the bare metal backing of the plate was literally almost gone. Not sure if the caliper hung up, wasnt adjusted propery or what the heck happened in this scenario. The inside piston was frozen but thats maybe due to all the abuse it took. No way to tell what the overall cause was. This is way past the squealers on the pads letting him know something was wrong. The tail gate would rattle when the brakes were applied the vibration was so bad.

I had a pair worse on a 2000 Blazer. The inside was the same as yours, but the outside was paper thin almost to the vents also. I will never understand how most people undervalue the need for GOOD tires and BRAKES.

Wow. Talk about trying to get your moneys worth out of the rotor and pads. That is just nuts.

Did the brakes on my moms ex's grand prix, they were worse than that. Almost through the vents to the other side.

They are definitley slotted rotors! I seen a set like that on a Silverado already, same answer you got. Just replace that side.

Back when I worked at Napa, I had a guy come in with a set like those (the first vented ones). He put it on the desk and asked if "this could be why my brakes were noisy". wtf

You need to own a shop in Cudahy-
We have a "Wall of Shame" showing some stuff that would make you sick.
How about household wire nuts on an electric fuel pump-
INSIDE THE GAS TANK!

i'm glad stew had some pictures. i worked on an expoder that had rear rotrs just like that. they were complaining of less stopping power. we qouted then for full rear brakes with calipers since the calipers siezed. and they said can you put it back together. i'm going to take it home. talking about stupid stuff had a tech bring in an expedition once for a clunk noise and he drove it first didn't hear anything. got it in racked it up. lifted it and the right front tire fell off cuz the lower balljoint was in two pieces. again the customer asked if we thought he could make it home to do it him self. :omg

Anybody who has wrenched for anylength of time has seen shit like this. It amazing the junk the general public drives. I've seen struts disassemble them selves when raising a car off the ground with a lift, fuel tanks held in with coat hangers, tie rods held together with bailing wire, inner pad gone and the caliper piston wearing on the rotor, wiped out tilt columns that flop around like a limp dick, mice (not evidence, but live running around mice,) roaches, guns, crack, weed, coke, shitty, maggot covered diapers, had a guy drive from I43 and silver spring to 36th street & SS with a broken tie rod end. Yeah, the roads are a dangerous place...

I thought I might need new rotors, but now I realize I have like 300K miles left on these. :rolf

I delivered uniforms for years. Every shop you go to, no matter if it's a dealership, small private shop, or the Tires Plus's of the world have stuff that looks like that in a managers office, service writers podium/desk, or a mechanics tool box. The worst thing I ever saw was a late 80's Acura Legend that when you raised the car up the rear shocks and whatever of the tower left that they were still bolted to came out and the rear suspension sagged horribly. The guy actually had the balls to accuse the guys fixing the car, claimed that they broke it and demanded them to fix it for free. They had never seen him before and figured he thought he could scam people who have forgotten more about cars than he'd ever seen. Or a lady who was let know that after doing the oil change and the free inspection, at a Caddy dealership, that her rear main was leaking a little and would be needed to be replaced soon. She then freaked out claiming that they sabotaged her car, and she "Housed" her car, because she parked her car in her "house" and that if it's broken, the technician had broken it. The explained to her that what was leaking was behind a transmission and that there was NO way the technician had the time to break her car on purpose. It took me about 10 minutes to change the rug under the bitches' feet before I could leave. The shit that mechanics, service writers, and service managers deal with on a regular basis is RIDICULOUS. Half the shit I wouldn't believe, if I hadn't overheard the craziness in my travels.

Some people shouldn't have vehicles...

This is an understatement.

I've seen some cars with under 100k that are in half as good of shape as Kristie's Saab @ 176k... And it's because some people don't understand why they need to maintain cars...

We had a guy who lived with us who owned a 62 Olds back in the early 70s. He wired the center link to the pitman and idler arms with a coat hanger. Never understood why no one would ride with him.

Reminds me of the guy I saw driving in his beaten to hell blazer with no tire, and rim sparking everywhere like it was nothing. Not to mention the rim was definitely smaller than the rest, he'd been driving on it for a while like that...
