:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

My Dad just called me. His garage is gone and all the tools with it. This is where we did all the body work on my RX7 last summer.

All I really know right now is there was a truck inside the garage that caught fire. My Dad was just in the garage. He went inside the house to eat lunch (garage is detached). Saw flames from the house (garage door was open). Tried to put it out with 2 extinguishers and a hose and it was already too late.

I feel so bad for my Dad right now. He lost a 22 car garage when we lived in Waterford to an electrical fire like 20 years ago. All his tools are gone again.

Sorry dude, that's a tough pill to swallow.

Like said above if there is a silver lining which there usually is, everyone is safe.

Thank god it was a detached garage too. Attached it may have ended up taking the whole house?

Sorry to hear about this Andy. :( Hopefully insurance will be able to cover everything and your dad can rebuild bigger and better. Was this the one in Franklin earlier. Heard a page for a garage fire out that way.

That sucks...I know I don't have the best tool collection out there, but for what I've got, it's been some 20 years in accumulating, so the tool thing hits hardest I think.

Glad your pa is alright though! He's always been so energetic every time I've talked to him, I can't imagine him being down for too long!

Sorry to hear about this loss of your dad's. Hopefully insurance will take care of everything. This should be a wake-up call for all of us that work on cars. at least have a fire extnguisher on hand for when the shit hits the fan, or at least a hose, I have both, just in case.... Good luck on the rebuild.

he had 2 fire extinguishers AND a hose.... A lot of times the shit spreads so quick you can't control it no matter what you try to do.

and sorry to hear about that Andy. If you need any help with anything let me know.

Sorry to hear it Andy, glad no one was hurt...hopefully the truck didn't have much sentimental value or anything and that insurance covers the financial end of it fairly.

The Fire dept said there was 4 other calls at the same time that they believe were due to lightning strikes. The Fire Dept got their tremendously quick and got the fire put out. The house is brick and only sustained about 6k (estimate) of damage. 1 picture window warped so they boarded that up and a bunch of aluminum fascias and soffits melted or warped on the house.

My dad said after he unloaded the two extinguishers the fire was so hot he could hardly get near it with a hose. I took a brief walk through and it doesn't appear that anything inside is salvageable.

My Dad has American Family for insurance and I think he had "Replacement Coverage" because he knows the money he has in tools. They cut him a check for 24k to get started on cleanup and rebuild. It's my understanding you need to provide quotes and an inventory and apply for a supplemental claim.

PureSound15

Andy I think if you have pictures of the garage you are able to use that as inventory as well - I could be wrong, though.

I planned on it. I'm not afraid to argue with an insurance company. And my Dad is not afraid to reach across the table and punch someone out if they deny the claim.

jbiscuit
07-23-2010, 03:58 PM
^ and he very well should if they deny his claim! Insurance companies can be a real pain in the ass with stuff like this. He should fight for every penny he thinks is owed him and don't settle for what they think he should get. Remember, insurance guys aren't car guys. They think Harbor Freight is "good enough" when he might have had $12k Snap-on boxes sitting in there! Good luck to him!!!

07-23-2010, 04:05 PM
Hope All goes well for your dad American Family is a bunch of Jag offs that cares more about making money off you then taking care of you when you need them. With all the Sh*t those fu(kers put me thru with my stuff I completly dropped all my policys with them and went else where.

some insurance companies nowadays just issue a check and dont even bother with the brand names. I hope he gets reimbursed for the loss but definitely get ahold of any pics he may have plus left over receipts. shit maybe people here might have receipts for tools you can use..lol

I took some pics of the radiator of the truck. I'm no expert but the right half of it is completely vaporized. Pretty sure that's where the lightning hit.

The right half of the a/c condenser and radiator are literally gone!

The last 3 days I've been sifting through soot, taking pictures and cataloging all my Dad's stuff for the insurance claim. Dirty work and not fun at all.

Might be a real dumb question, but if the lightning hit the truck like that, was the garage door open? Just trying to picture how it started.

Hopefully he feels 24k is fair, at least so far. I should double check my coverage.

Garage door open and front end of the truck was actually under the door (so you couldn't close the garage door).
