I have an HJC AR10 Snell SA2005 helmet. It's one of the least expensive SA helmets out there, at about $300. I looked at a lot of helmets before buying the HJC. I originally bought a Pyrotect that was about $280 but after wearing it for a while I decided it didn't really fit my head correctly, since it rubbed a giant red spot into my forehead, plus the inside smelled like a petrochemical plant. And it weighed a holy ton. The HJC is the lightest fiberglass helmet I could find. It also has a removable liner that can be machine washed to get the funk out of it.

The key thing is finding a helmet that fits YOUR head correctly. My head is big and my forehead must stick out or something because most helmets hurt like hell. The only two I found that fit me OK were the HJC and one by Zamp. None of the ones from Bell, Pyrotect, Impact, or G-Force were as comfortable as the HJC on MY head.

Anyway... your mileage may vary.

You can try Pegasus Racing in New Berlin. Atleast be able to try a couple on to see how they fit. I found the sizes don't seem to be the same across brands. But I have a big melon.

I ended up finding one at the Victory dealership in Muskego. Somebody special ordered a ZTR helmet and never picked it up. They sold it to me at cost.

I have 2 actually and love them both. The 400 is my first helmet. They run new like 130 bucks and are pretty nice. I also have their top of the line one with is the exo1000. Those are like 350. Which have air pumps in it to give a perfect custom fit. Also has an internal tinted visor(for riding obviously)

Those Scorpion helmets are Snell M rated, not SA.

I've never seen a brand-new SA rated helmet for under $250.

That's pretty lame that they are making you get a SA2010 even the NHRA isn't that bad

That's the truth right there. Never understood why people make safety equipment the place to cut corners.

My Bell MAG4 was my first helmet that was $299.

well i don't think it has to be a 2010 model but if im buying one i might as well get a 2010 so i have the full 5 year "shelf life"...but it does have to be SA rated no way around that...i'll look into the places you guys suggested and hopefully find something i like.

The earliest you could buy a Snell 2010 helmet is October 1, 2010. That's when the standard is scheduled to be released.

So if you need a helmet for this summer, it's going to be Snell 2005 or nothing.

I see.

I bought mine from http://www.soloracer.com/helmets.html. I would have preferred to buy one from a local dealer but they were all too far away. I ended up buying a few helmets that looked like good candidates and then sending the rejects back. I did talk to Brett at Soloracer a few times on the phone and he was very helpful.

I got an AR10 for a little over $200, though that was a through a friend. I just sized one up at a motorcycle shop and ordered online. Safety isn't what you want to cheap out on.
http://shop.tougefactory.com/ has them too.

Most AR10's, which are SA helmets retail for around 300 or less. HJC sizing between the M and SA helmets are the same, so you go to a motorcycle shop and figure out the sizing on an M rated HJC, then go order one online thats SA rated in the appropriate size.
