View Full Version : Help with plugs on E85?

Lately my car has been breaking up under half or more throttle. The first place that I am addressing are the plugs. Currently I am running a one step colder ngk plug gapped at .33. My question is would the fact that the plug is one step colder becausing this with E85? I have regapped the plugs twice now and it still breaks up every now and then. The first time that this happened was when I was on the dyno about a month ago. The motor is fine, did a compression test and it was 210 across the board.

thats a little wierd, have you tried running normal plugs with the e85?

You ever try tightening up the gap at all (maybe in the .25-.28 range)? E85 is a more difficult mixture to blow through.

Yes I have. I have gone from .35 to .33.

I thought that e85 burns slower than normal fuel, which means that you need a normal or hotter plug? could be wrong though

What kind of boost are you running? That gap seems to be far too large, you may be blowing the spark out. On my evo i was running .026" at stockish boost (19-22psi) and .022" on E85 @ 30psi.

fix it and get it to gld on friday lol or just go play cod with me tonight and blow some steam off

I am running around 17lbs of boost. With the pulley I am running they recommend .35 with the LSJ.

i say put some stock plugs in it and see if its better the 85 is a slower burnin fuel i wouldn't doubt its not hot enough

i dont really think from what ive talked with Jim that that car needs a cooler plug,the higher octane so to speak would not need a colder plug for detonation purposes

I still say try putting stock plugs in and gap the plugs at .35

That just seems like an awfully large gap. While 17psi isn't huge, it's still substantial. I would try something closer to .030

Stock temp plugs, gap them between 0.028 and 0.030" if you have a good ignition system.
Check your grounds also and make sure that your ignition and alternator are working properly and not getting voltage drop under load.
