IS it REALLY loud when you let off especially?? :confused

Like a propeller airplane crashing?

Its a possible crush sleeve/pinion bearing tension issue.

Otherwise wheel bearing or brake calpier/rotor issue :confused

That sorta noise only comes from the rear end.....

Tranny mount failures on autos dont really make noise

Broken torque arm/mount might cause it to contact the body of the car and cause direct transmission of the read end noise into the passenger compartment...

Other than that, a broken bearing/race on the axles maybe?

Or something like Tom mentioned...

Also could be something wrong with the tranny too... maybe a torque converter issue?

im so sure the sound isnt coming from the rear, you really cant even feel the grinding, its just a loud sound through first, and in reverse, and so on.... its coming from between the drivers seat and passenger seat.........you really need to hear it to understand....

when my tranny mount broke awhile ago, the sound was ungodly loud, sounded like someone was banging a sludge hammer under the car

Unless a U joint took ****...

Where you describe the problem as being doesnt make much sence as there is nothing mechanical that rotates below the console except the U joint or something blew up in the trans like planetary gears... which it could, being it gets quieter when it hits 2nd....

Yeah that tranny mount thing wont cause a whine, just the thud as it hits the tunnel.

You may have more serious issues on this one...

Could you drop the transmission pan to see if there are medal shavings in it?
