Kobe is a little bitch, great player no doubt...but due to that fact (and Phil Jackson is kind of a bitch) I'm easily rooting for the Celtics. Not that I will bother watching until if/when L.A. is on the brink of losing it or there is a game 7 either way. Not a Boston fan by any means either, but they are more tolerable I guess, to me.

I think The Onion sums it up pretty well: http://www.theonion.com/articles/nation-undecided-on-whether-it-hates-celtics-or-la,17559/

Kobe is in no way, shape, nor form, the 2nd best player ever. I'd be hard pressed to put him in the top 10 even...hell, he wouldn't have even been the second best player of either the lakers or celtics in the 80's, lol.

There is a difference b/w second best, and ones second favorite.

As much as I hate Kobe, the guy is effing good. Easily top 10 all time and probably top 5.

I wish basketball would go back to being a mans game. I stoped watching it after a hard foul meant you'd be instanly t'd up....or players isntantly cry to the ref. for a little slap on the hand or every little bump and push in the lane. NBA reminds me of Godsmacks new song :shades

name all others you would put above him...Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Larry Bird, Pete Maravich, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Julius Erving, John Stockton, Michael Jordan.

edit: throw in charles barkley too.

And those are the ones I don't have to put any thought into....so yeah, he doesn't make my top ten.

Heck, even of those playing today or recently, I can come up with a few that merit consideration of being placed higher on the "greatest ever" list above Kobe: Iverson, Duncan, James. Not saying they are for certain, but it's at least debatable.

This isn't to take anything away from Kobe...this isn't to say he's a chump. He IS a great player, there can be no question. But not the second greatest of all time.

Today's game is ponderous and tedious.

Lets be real here.Barkley was phenomenal in his heyday. Hate to say it, he was actually underrated imo...you look at the impact he had on the teams he played, and also what he did with what he had. In my mind, he's undoubtedly the best of the small "power" forwards to ever play...which is saying a lot, considering that many consider elgin baylor to be the best of the small "power" forwards.

Just as Barkley couldn't do what Kobe does on the court, Kobe couldn't do what barkley did...and I consider barkley's feats more impressive honestly.

john stockton? great but not kobe great...

Lebron James? UMMM NOOOOOOO....great talent could be the best..not even close yet..

Oh no doubt...

But "Kobe great"? What do you have to be to achieve that? A ball hog with a coach that feeds you plays left and right and posses poor shot selection? Yeah, then Stockton wasn't "Kobe great" :goof

But stockton was arguably the best point to ever play, whereas Kobe might be in the top 5 shooting guards. Given that I regard the skills of PG's higher than SG's (Jordan being a notable exception), yeah, I'd give the edge to stockton over bryant. Bryant does his job (score and defend) great, but Stockton did his (protect the ball, run the offense, control the tempo, create scoring opportunities for teamates then himself, defend) even better.

With more consideration to my list add:

Bill Russell and Elgin Baylor as being better than Kobe.

With that, I'd have to say Kobe would certainly make my top 20 list, and likely be in my top 15...as I'd be hard pressed to come up with too many more that I'd consider better.

A case could be made for Shaquille and David Robinson, being right around where Kobe would be...though I'm not sure either supplant him on my list. I might be able to convince myself that Clyde Drexler deserves a spot above him. Oh, and Dominique Wilkins would be around there as well!

Yeesh...this is hard!

'Nique was my favorite player growing up and holds a special spot in my heart and I think Kobe is a egotistical ass but Kobe is a better player, no doubt. To top that off Eddie Jones was my favorite player after Dominique (hard to explain why) and Kobe pushed him out pretty much, or made him expendable and Jones was an All-Star. Even more reason to dispise the punk (Kobe). Kobe is one of the "better" players of all time, IMO. Not sure where he ranks in my opinion exactly though, haven't thought about it too much.

Also not sure how anyone likes Kobe either...it's like liking A-Rod or Bonds. No charisma, an ass to everyone but a great player.

Where Kobe is better, without question, is defense. 'Nique wouldn't even be able to stop my grandmother from scoring even if you gave her a bowling ball to shoot with, lol.

Kobe probably does a better job creating his own scoring opportunities (this is almost by design or of necessity) , whereas 'nique was a better offensive player without the ball...

And the dunk contest b/w Jordan and Dominique? Wilkens won that hands down!

Not sure where he ranks in my opinion exactly though, haven't thought about it too much.Try it...it's fun :thumbsup

P.S. The fact that lebron was mentioned on your list made me :rolf. WOWlol...if your reading comprehension was higher, you'll understand that they didn't make any list...they only merit at least some consideration.

It's funny though that you mention a lot of age related accomplishments...that's puffery. So, he was the youngest to do x, y, z...still doesn't make him better than jordan :confused Of the accomplishments that actually mean something, most three point fg in a game, he's tied with the great, Donyell Marshall! Ooooh, the great Donyell-they built his own wing at Hall of Fame for his accomplishments:rolf
number of Three pointers in a half? Well, that would put him in a 4 way tie for the team lead for the Milwaukee Bucks :wow :rolf

Listen, I don't call Kobe a chump, so if you expect me to make that case, think again. He's a terrific player, right around the top 15 on my list.

But let's face it, he turns the ball over a lot, his FG percentage is rather so-so for a high scoring shooting guard; this is in part because he forces a lot of bad shots. Kobe's scoring average is pretty good...but not incredibly stellar. For as much acclaim as Kobe receives for his defense, he doesn't really average a lot of takeaways.

Clutch? Kobe also can choke quite well too...three airballs at the end of a game against the Jazz? He ain't even close to the clutch king.

So again, put up to the top levels of achievement, Kobe shows chinks that others don't...

for fun....compare mj's career starts against kobes career stats....

to say he;s not clutch is insane....
kobe was playing defense and playing it well before it became "cool"

this guy cant win...he scores 40 hes greedy...he scores 15 and he sucks...he wins 3 rings they says its cuz of shaq...he wins 2 more and they say its gasol...when he wins 2 more it will be because of bynum? lol....the man scored 81 in a game...just think about that.....he has 5 rings and is only 31...say what you will but this guy has EARNED his way to be one of the top3 EVER...

you say you would "consider" lebron? WHY???? please explain this to me?

Prince Valiant
06-18-2010, 03:16 PM
for fun....compare mj's career starts against kobes career stats....Yeah, makes one wonder why people compare Kobe to Mj, eh? I mean, there really isn't much of a comparison.

to say he;s not clutch is insane....
Is that what I said?!?

He ain't even close to the clutch king. This isn't saying he isn't a clutch player...but compare Jordan in the clutch to Kobe. Kobe's had some great ones, but MJ's had better, bigger ones. And then, even though MJ wasn't as young to be able to be put in this position there is always this for Kobe:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VWgfx-bXsg4&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VWgfx-bXsg4&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Also to be fair, one of the three "airballs" did kind of graze the rim :D

Kobe's 81 was damn impressive. I'd probably have a tough time scoring 81 in a gym by-myself in two hours, let alone in 48 minutes against NBA players...but I digress. Say I consider David Robinson around my 16th best or 17th best ever...well, he scored 71 once. I don't even put David Thompson in my best ever top 20, but he scored 73 in a game (as a college player though, Thompson would be considered one of the 5 best....). Hakeem Olajuwon never scored more than 52, but I consider him one of my top 8.

When great players have monster games they can do damn impressive things...but his single game pt total doesn't sway me from having him in the top 15, not top 2, or even 3.

Kobe's playing defense since before it was cool? He wasn't even in the league when defense became cool, lol (Think Detroit Pistons 89 and 90). Defensive specialist like michael cooper, Dennis Rodman, Alvin Robertson...hell, Michael Jordan all were terrific defenders whose defensive stats made Kobe's look a little pale, and were around LONG before Kobe...

As far as Lebron, you wanted to compare Kobe's stats to MJ's?!? A more apt comparison is Kobe's to Lebron. Only thing is, is that Lebron has thus far averaged more pts, more rebounds, more assist, right around the same number of steals...

This isn't to say I think Lebron is better...right now, starting a team, I'd want Kobe. But to think they are comparable when evaluating who is the top player in the league currently is silly. While I think they are pretty comparable, I'd could only say that lebron is safely in my top 25, while Kobe is safely in my top 15...but lebron is young, he could move up. Kobe is in his prime 6 or 8 seasons...for him, this is as good as it gets.

For the record I was a Kobe hater..I bought into the media and their BS and what they tried to portray of him. After some research it enlightened me of his work ethic and desire to win. He will do ANYTHING to win even if it meant him not taking shots...but how many times this year alone in the playoffs did he make shots with a hand in his face? He does it BECAUSE HE CAN! I bet if you ask his teammates they dont mind one bit! Actually if you look closely at the end of the celtics game 7 you see his team praising him and encouraging him to take it on himself. Yet his haters talk shit about it, amazing. LOL As hrsp said, the guy cant win with his critics, because if all those miraculous cluch wins, 5 rings and mvp awards wont change their mind (when his carrer isint even over yet)..then nothing will!

People hate him because he is a pompous ass, not because they don't think hes any good. If he wins 10 more titles and 8 more MVP's, people will still dislike him the same. Does he work hard and is great? Sure, doesn't help his personality. Not everyone likes players just because they are good.

BTW Kobe was 6 for 24 shooting in game 7...you can debate whether he was really all that "clutch".

This isint a popularity contest, its about his skills. A bad game 7 against a stelar defense does not erase what he has done this post season alone. As far as his attitude im assuming you have actually met the guy before? He has a desire to win and has said it himself, he is not afraid to show it. To be a real leader you have to get into peoples faces and show that you care by not taking defeat kindly. Kobe is the leader of the team and a damn good one..the team respects him yet everyone else thinks hes a "pompous ass". People base their opinion and assumptions which is wrong in itself. A team with a pompous ass inconsiderate ball hog does not win championships *cough* lebron *cough* :P much less 5 of them.
