It's pretty involved to do it yourself, gotta get everything just right. But if you spend the time and learn how to do it, it will definitely pay off.

Do some reading online like letsrunem said, to see whats involved, and I dont think its that bad. I did mine last year and they turned out great. A few tools, patience and Ford gears seem to be the way to go.

If you have good mechanical aptitude and understand how to use a torque wrench as well as terms like backlash and preload you will be fine. Gears can be intimidating the first time around but are fairly simple to install. But the bottom line is weather you trust yourself to do it. Otherwise around $300 sounds about average to have someone else do it. :thumbsup

I would do my first gear swap on a heavy truck rear end, dana 70 or GM corp 14 bolt, side load on carrier is "adjustable". The 8.8 rear (assuming Ford is still using those on your car) uses shims to set lash and bit more time. Ford has a kinda retarded pinon depth setup as well, Ive done a lot of gear swaps and I spent way to much time over analizing the depth on my drag car last time.

If you tackle the job yourself and screw up shims I have spares, another friend who had to buy an "extra" set after his 8.8 howeled like hell....

I bought used gears. Set them at the tight limits of the spec (.00x) and they are quiet as a mouse. Necer did a pain pattern. Done half a dozen mopar 8 3/4 trucks this way and never had one make noise.

If you are going to say "don't fear the gear" then suggest 4.56 or 4.88, although without knowing a guy's setup its hard to suggest anything. I have a set of 4.56 on the bench right now that I am putting in place of my 4.10s.

I had Marv at C&M do mine. He did it all, dropped off car and cash and 10K miles later couldn't be happier.
The S197 has a crazy first gear in the trans. 4.10:1 is perfect. I did 3.73:1 FRPP gears and it suits me well. I like hitting 4400 (peak torque NA) when dropping to 3rd at 65 Mph or dropping to 2nd at 40 Mph.

How much did Marv charge? I have heard nothing but good things about that shop. I heard he has limited availability though.

Waver I will also call PortPonies to see what he can do and check his schedule too.

Irish I think 4.30's may be a little much. For a slightly more agressive approach those are the gears I would get though. 4.10's seem to be good all around for my use, except losing a little fuel economy but ehhhhhhh.

Right now I have 3.55's so this should be a nice improvement.

most gear installs you can reuse the existing side shims, and the old pinion shim,in fact its where i start. then use paint on the gear face to check wear pattern and a dial indicator for back lash its not that bad to do.and yeah i would put at least a 4.10 in that car

What all is required for this job? Do I need the installation kit at 25,000 miles? I dont think I need a programmer for the manual car, but Im sure the speedo will be off so will need to be recalibrated. What else?

I have my Diff apart right now. Yet this is a 28 not a 31. Not sure what the new stangs have in them. Looks like a DIY, but I'm having a buddy help me with pushing-pressing the bearings off. If your diff is iron like mine and rusted, you could have it blasted and fresh coat of paint while it's out. You can buy a shim and bearing kit from Summit.

its really not that bad to do,but i may suggest pulling the whole rear differential and spraying it,i would bet if you look its rusted to shit. when i had mine tied up at marvs i pulled the rear and gave it to Frits he welded the tubes sandblasted it and powder coated it otherwise i would have done the gears myself,i have done several swaps on my old mustang 8.8 its really not that hard if you start with the original shims and go from there.

OK so its Portponies or Fast Times in New Berlin. Are those the 2 most recomended installers? 4.10s should be here tomorrow. Trying to get this done before winter.

Tire Diameter, tranny gear ratio, purpose, NA or FI these are all things to consider before choosing a ratio. Ford Motorsport gears are the only way to go btw. I have 3:73's on a 18" tire and a 2.95 first gear ratio; puts me at about 1750 rpm at 55 in 5th. Throw a 15" slick on there and my setup works for the track too. All in what you want! But to be honest kinda wish I went with 4:10's now that I have that longer first gear!

You know, when discussing gearing and tire diameter effects on it, it's the *outside* diameter that's relevant.

I think most on here know that, it was a simplistic example... If you want I can measure my tire

Yeah, I was going for faster accell with out killing my gas mileage too bad. I still drive the car 15-20k during the summer months

I think most on here know that, it was a simplistic example... If you want I can measure my tire :rolleyes:It wasn't "simplistic", it was wrong. "Simplistic" would have *simply* been saying "I've got 26 inch tire, blah blah blah" because, 26" is a pretty common outside diameter for street tire. You could have compared it to a 24.5" OD slick. Again, not too out there an example.

I mean, an 18" wheel can have very low profile tire, leaving one with a much smaller outside diameter than is mounted on my 15" wheels (275/60R15, being ~ 28" OD).

I mean, I know this is WI, and were simple folks here in flyover country...but you don't have to be so simplistic as to be wrong. We ain't the dimmest bulbs in the world.

Who knows? Even *YOU* might learn a thing or two :wow

Just installing to go faster red light to red light. No track time ever and I dont know what my first gear ratio is. Whatever it is is too slow. My pretty much stock stang will get beat by most minivans nowadays--lol!

I will say that since I have added the muffler delete package that I beat them in the db category!

lol gtfo. i put 4.30's in mine and i barely lost 1 mpg on the highway. daily drive it during the summer as well. dont understand how people think that gears will KILL your mpg unless you're rodding on it 24/7

I went from 24mpg to 22 when I went with the 3.73's.....The gas mileage thing was my thinking then......I might switch over the winter.

I'd say 4:10's and be done... any higher for anything other than a weekend car can get annoying shifting every milisecond. Assuming you have a standard trans? But, thats just my opinion.... Good luck with whatever you choose.

Yes its the TR 3650 and the goal is to be a little Quicker 0-125 mph. 4.10s came in today!
