Arnie Beswick Driven 1965 Mercury Comet A/FX Car Heads to Auction, SOHC Motor and All
By Brian Lohnes Posted 04/06/10

We've been Comet crazy here over the last couple of days, but reader Phil Cooper tipped us off to one of the coolest Comets ever built. This A/FX car was raced by Arnie Beswick who is known for his prolific career as a Pontiac racer, but like Sox and Martin, he had a brief career as a Mercury factory pilot. Without a hint of exaggeration we can say that this is one of the coolest cars we have ever laid eyes on.

The way that these cars were thrashed several times a week, often at cow path drag strips, has us amazed at how together this one stayed. It has the original factory fiberglass pieces, gauges, roll bar, plexiglass windows, seats, Aluminim bellhousing, and even the shifter is original!

The biggest story is under the hood where the 427ci SOHC engine resides. The ad does not claim that the engine is original, but who the hell really cars about that. It's a SOHC 427 and it is located in the car, hooked to the proper modified T-10 and rolling on real 1965-era M&H AFX12 slicks.

We're getting all worked up here and we've not even touched upon the crazy level of documentation involved with the car. The original sales agreement and contract with Beswick comes with the car along with letters from Fran Hernandez, telegrams from Beswick, and a stack of other paperwork.

Mecum will be selling this car at their Spring Classic Auction, May 19-23, 2010
