I didn't want to hijack the Wisconsin vacation thread but was looking for more details on Door County. What is there to do and see there, where are the "hot spots" to check out, etc? Possibly looking for a bed & breakfast place to stay a couple of nights as this would be a short honeymoon. Thanks--Dan

Peninsula State Park is gorgeous. Definitely a good camping spot. You can drive around the whole park next to the water the whole way - it's really neat.

Sturgeon Bay has a lot of stuff for kids and what not. Marine museum and that kind of thing.

The rest of Door County is pretty old, and geared towards people who want to shop for nick nacks that cost $$$$.

^^^ what he said.

Also, they have a "festival" just about every weekend. Check out Door Co. online and find out when they are celebrating your favorite fruit, and go that weekend. If you are into light houses, there are plenty of them in Door Co. Take the ferry to Washington Is. and then the boat shuttle to Rock Is. no motor vehicle allowed there, the 2 mile hike to Eagle Bluff Light house is worth it. We stayed at the Scandinavian Lodge, very nice place....jacuzzi hot tub.....in the room. ;)

Brian I will have to look online and see when it's Mike Cooper Weekend, I don't know too many fruits but he would be my favorite if I had to choose.

Thanks for the info guys, the more the better.

It a good place to have a lot of sex with your S.O.

Very laid back and relaxing.

The also have an old school drive-in movie theatre. Not many of those around anymore.

Al Johnson's is the place in sister bay with the goats on the roof. Cool scandanavian restaurant too. Sister bay also has lots of touristy stuff, as its the largest of the cities up there. Fish creek is cool too. Pennisula state park is there and you can rent mopeds at a place to cruise around town with. White gull inn is a good place for couples. Awesome breakfast too!

My wife and I went on a Haunted Trolley ride which was pretty interesting. They take you to interesting haunted places around Egg Harbor and Peninsula State Park. While on the trolly they also tell some interesting stories. It was pretty fun.

Egg harbor is excellent. Make sure you try the bloody mary at Shipwrecked!

How about places to stay, any nice little bed & breakfast inns? She has mentioned a few times wanting to stay at one of those. Thanks for the rest of the ideas.

Dammit, I started looking online and they have the haunted trolley tours and the lighthouse trolley tours but those fuckers don't begin their tours until the middle of June. WTF is with that? Pisses me off.....

Only thing that keeps me from going to Door County is that all the hotels are old. Now I realize that is kind of the appeal of the area, but I'd like to stay at a nicer more modern high end hotel. The wife and I wanted to go one year and every last hotel I looked at had that old historic look. So we didn't go. If Marriot or someone built a nice high end hotel there we'd go. Something like this place we stayed at in AZ: http://www.jwdesertridgeresort.com/

Whitefish Dunes/ Cave Point is another idea. Both neat, I grew up there in the summers about a mile from there at my parents place on Clark Lake.

The Skyway drive-in movie theater is cool. It is like $6.75 (last lear) for two movies. Cheap, the movies are new enough also. They rotate new moves every few weeks.

Although I hope a huge ass super hotel will never be constructed, are these to your standards? Not that big or whatever, but will do the job.

The Stone Harbor place doesn't look too bad. And I'm not trying to be snobby about it, but it's just not my style of resort.

While I would sometimes agree about the big hotels, for a romantic getaway I think the cozy little bed and breakfast inn is a perfect setting.

I can't believe a marriot was referred to as a upper class hotel :rolf

The Stone Harbor resort is pretty nice. Also badass walleye fishing right from the rocks/shore at night there if that matters to you. Although being in Sturgeon Bay, it is then a lot of driving everywhere for when people want to go do things.

Did you click on the link I posted? Yeah this place was a real dump. :durr I've never seen so many $100k+ cars in one place outside of the Detroit Auto Show.

dude mariott is an upper middle class hotel chain.....at its best.... the top dogs out there none of us will likely ever have the pleasure of staying in.... i've had the pleasure of staying in several marriots on the road that made me wish i would've slept in the truck at a weighside..... the comment made me laugh cus its like saying u love the mona lisa, but u just wish there was a nice HD logo in the middle of it ..... the whole appeal of places like door county is their subtle nature and their antiquated environment...its the simplicity not the amenities that sell the place.

Again, DID YOU CLICK THE LINK? I've stayed at ghetto ass Marriot's as well. This was not the case. Regardless of how you rate it, that is what I'd be looking for at Door County. And it doesn't exist. That was the point.

I'm comparing this:
http://www.westwoodshores.net/images/suites/one-bedroom.jpg
http://www.westwoodshores.net/images/suites/westwood-shores-cozy-room.jpg
http://www.westwoodshores.net/images/resort/indoor-pool.jpg

To this:

http://images.triseptsolutions.com/slideshow/PHXMART_D01.jpg
http://images.hotelconnect.co.uk/hotels/4790_main_Large.jpg

And I said high end, not "for the rich". You can't argue that that Marriot isn't higher end then the places in Door County. I don't care what you call it, the Desert Ridge Resort is hella nice.

Anyway, my point was if there was just more variety we'd probably go pretty often because we like close inexpensive trips like that.

Altough Door county is pretty commercialized most people want to stay at a nice quiet place. Not a commercial hotel /resort. Door county is not a place to find an upscale chain hotel. Private rentals or b&b ftw...
