Ok so I've been laid off for 5 weeks now. My hall calls me this morning and I thought they had a job for me. Nope. I get to go to the expo center for an apprenticeship job fair and teach high school kids how to solder. I sit there and solder all day and watch them solder. At least I get paid though so that's cool I guess. Only problem is I haven't been up early since I got laid off so tomorrow might be a little rough haha.

Any ideas how to deal with HS kids with hot objects? :rolf

I'm with Coop "Now grab that with your hand and squeeze - it may feel like it's burning, but that's just the magic entering your body!"

I just found out its mostly MPS kids that come to this and they usually try to steal all of our welding shit.

This should be fun....:alcoholic

Don't you have to know how to solder first?

:rolf

Have fun. I'm sure you'll be getting all of the Bradley Tech. punks.

Tell them it will improve their vision if they put it in the eye.

I kind of wish I was doing the welding part and not the soldering part so I could just have my hood on and laugh the whole time.

I'd love to teach HS kids !!!

I always have this reoccurring dream of walking into my old HS and busting some heads and teaching kids how to run a mill, lath, weld, tin and what not. Because I bumped into my old shop teacher (retired) and he said in a sad tone " Yea most of the shop isn't being used "

Cudahy HS had one of the Best metal classes around, only reason I know what I know today is from that Class............

I probably have had this dream at least 5-6 times...

woahhhh off track here LOL

Dude just have fun with it, put yourself in there position and talk to them like your a Teacher and know a bit about life. As I'm sure you do.....

Oh I'm planning on trying my best. My weld instructor just pretty much said there is no hope for the kids that are going to be there. Basically I'm going to at least try to get them interested somehow. There has to be some good ones in the bunch. :goof

When I used to teach "inner city youth" that we PAID to come to the university for a week I used to tell them that this is an easy job that pays relatively well. Some were more interested when they realized they didn't have to work very hard, didn't have to deal with people, and got to work indoors for 12-$15/hr.

If there are some girls there, focus on them. Usually it'll pique the guys' interest whether it's because it's a girl or because of one-up-womanship.

one of my plans to get them interested is to basically tell them that if they join out of HS, they will most likely be making around $40/hr by the time they become journeymen. That might get some interest too lol

I take it nobody has a kid that is going to this? Otherwise I'd say stop by my booth. Even if they aren't interested in steamfitting they get to weld and solder.

Well it wasn't a bad day. Everyone behaved pretty well considering what I have heard about years past. The girls did better than the guys because they actually listen to what you are saying and they want it to look nice. A lot of the guys don't listen and then when they started soldering they were all over the place.
