Some other cars have well documented and tried and true performance "recipes" to get to different levels (usually measured by 1/4 mile times). Anything like that out there for the 04.5-07 Cummins?

Looking for a mod path to get a high 12 sec truck or so and still be daily driveable.

its easy to make it a daily driver with a common rail due to "chip tuning". to run 12s it will take about 550rwhp. You can run upper 13s on stock stuff on a "hot tune" but dont plan on various parts lasting long. for 12s The trans will only take so much abuse so youll need to upgrade that. The turbo is going to be toasty so add a 62/71/12 turbo IE Hi Tech Turbo super street. tuning go with a Smarty Race tune (230hp single tune). 90hp injectors, fed by fass fuel system or equivalent. the cp3 could use a little help so check out an "arson 3" upgrade or equivalent as insurance. with that fueling and turbo it will put u about 40psi of boost so heads studs might be a thing to think about.

Thanks for the info! I did know about the trans already and I guess want to keep things "safe" for a while until I can afford the upgrade that.

It's also a mass game. If you keep tall/skinny tires (like 265x85R16E) and/or a standard cab long box then life is much easier. People with their crewcab 6.5' box and 35" LRE mud tires have more problems with transmissions and going fast than others.

Good point. I don't have mud tires, but do have a loaded quad cab short box...
