Hyundai Sonata turbo that is....

and that's on 87 octane in a 2.0 i4 too :wow

http://jalopnik.com/5505977/2011-hyundai-sonata-turbo-274-hp-34-mpg-no-manual

Hyundai used to be an automotive punchline, but with the new Hyundai Sonata Turbo dishing up a cracking 274HP and 269 lb-ft of torque and 34 MPG from a twin-scroll turbocharged 2.0-liter direct-injection four-cylinder we wonder: who's laughing now?

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata is striking a new pose in the hyper-competitive midsize family sedan market, abandoning the V6 in favor of an all inline-four-based lineup. The basic Sonata comes with a 200 HP 2.4-liter direct-injection four making 35 MPG, and the newly announced Sonata Hybrid uses a combo of a 2.4-liter 169 HP gas engine, 40 HP electric motor and lithium ion battery good for 37 MPG city/39 MPG highway (seems a bit disappointing), but the turbo model certainly spices things up.

The addition of a twin scroll turbo to a 2.0-liter direct-injection four pushes output to 274 HP with 269 lb-ft of torque while returning 22 MPG city/34 MPG highway— that's on regular 87 octane by the way (black magic). The Mazdaspeed3 makes 263 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque at 25 MPG if you want to put that in context. Somewhat sadly, a new six-speed automatic is the only available transmission, so dash those fantasies of a proper four-cylinder turbocharged family sport sedan.

Isn't that the same motor that's in the Genesis?

nice setup but imo the new body style is hideous! I really liked the prev body style.

And I'm the opposite. I think that Hyundai's get better looking with each successive generation. My next door neighbor has a previous generation Sonata.

I've been reading up on the Sonata since the superbowl commercials. I want a wagon version.

Nope. This is a new engine.

I'm not impressed. My friend has gotten mid 30's with his bone stock 2000 LS1 six speed Trans Am. That's 20 year old technology.

Have you seen the Kia version that debuted at NY? Same car, different metal. Holy crap is this thing nice looking. The Koreans are really competing now. I think it looks leaps and bounds better then the Accord or Camry.

Some of you guys are over exaggerating your highway mpg. There's no chance in hell an LS1 is going to make mid 30's unless the road is completely flat and you're doing 50 mph with shit gears in the back. Sorry that's BS.

The only way my 7500 lb diesel truck will see 30 mpgs is if I'm on a totally flat road doing 55-58 with the converter locked up and lets face it, our freeways are far from flat. Crank that up to 65-70 probably getting closer to 20-24 mpg HAND CALCULATED. The stupid mpg things up top are off by a TON especially if you do mixed driving. Chris, I highly doubt your brother's truck gets an AVERAGE of 30 mpg especially if you're doing over 65 unless the thing has some 2.73's or some shit.

Also, the EPA takes an AVERAGE, not the max of what the car can do.

Either way looks like a mix of a CLS and a Camry, that front style works for two doors, not so much four.

I was actually excited about the Genesis till I sat in one. I know its cheap performance, but I wasn't expecting the interior to be that cheap and flimsy. Hopefully they make this sedan better.

I currently own 3 hyundais now,XG350L for my wife, accent for my daughter, and a azera for myself. Best quality cars I have owned. Built right. My next car will be a genesis sedan. American cars cannot compete with them for quality, dependabilty or luxury options for your money. I keep the trans -am for performance.Rick

I love how everyones thinks I'm kidding!! 03 cummins 6spd crew cab longbox 3:73s on 35s avg 28-30mpg hand calculated at 70mpg :) gained 6mpg on a single 240hp tune. its not unordinary at all! my friends twin turbo 06 makes around 800hp (about what theyr making with his setup not dynoed yet) and he avg 26mpg with an auto.

Meh, imo not that impressive...

I'll stick with my 9-5 Aero. 260hp, Automatic, 30+mpg Average.

If it's anything like my wife's 9-3 I'll most likely almost never have any problems with it, and it's definately a nicer car than a Hyundai or Kia.

Im still not going to hbelieve it at all unless it was my truck and I was doing the calculations. Most people i know average 16-18 mixed and anywhere between 20-24 on the highway. Go over 70 that drops to about 18. Winter time i was averaging about 14-15 mostly driving to work and idling.

There is no way I would ever average even 26 mpgs unless it was a flat 60 mph stretch. My old bosses 06 with a 6 speed and a juice w/attitude did about the same as my auto.

Throw in 35's and you're fucked even more. The BS flag waves high :P

Because making up high gas mileage numbers makes them feel better about themselves.

Not me I feel like a grandpa then. While I have gotten 27mpg on the freeway in the Z06 my AVG on the dash is 14.3! Car is A LOT more fun at 14.3 mpg lol.

yea I will back this up. I actually did get 29 mpg being easy on it with almost 100% freeway miles. But once you actually have fun with it, it shoots down considerably like HP Addict said.

See this is more realistic! I totally believe you can get 27mpg out of an LSx car on the highway...its just claiming you average mid 20's beating the shit out of something is horseshit. I'll never believe it because it is infact HORSESHIT unless your definition of beating is a full throttle run once a tank.

A fricken Civic won't get 24 mpg if you sit there and beat it all day long.

Thank you! The previous 3 posts have now helped common sense return to this thread.

I've got a best tank of 45 mpg in the Honda Fit I currently drive but I'd never say I get 45 mpg all the time with it. My worst tank with the Fit was 30 mpg (winter), so when people ask what gas mileage I get I usually say 35-40 mpg.

Right, however if you look at the title of the thread "34 mph hwy"

So if some of these other vehicles get that for hwy miles it makes this Hyundai not as great as it first sounds...

the problem is you are comparing your personal experiences with the EPA rated numbers... And just as he sayin goes "your mileage will vary". The same people that get 30mpg out of there c6 vette could get into the 40mpg range with the Hyundai in question.

In essence I totally agree with chris on this one. An EPA rated 34 mpg highway with 274 horse all on 87 octane in a midsized sedan is very impressive I can't think of anything else on the market that has hose kinds of numbers.

I still find this claim difficult to believe.

Im curious: did you have a tail wind?
How warm was it outside?
Were you going down hill?
How many miles did you pull this off for?
How did you calculate fuel economy?
