so I am looking at LCD tv's. Looking for a 40-50" 1080p. Is it worth it to spend the extra money for 120hz, or for normal tv watching, some dvd's on occasion, and some xbox 360, will the 60hz work just fine?

120hz yes... the 240hz no, not really worth it.

Most TV's have the 120hz option already, you can always disable it if you dont like the effect it gives the film.

my current tv right now is a 2006 model samsung 23" lcd. 720p/60hz. So I'm sure anything would be an improvement. I was looking at an Insignia 42" 1080p/120hz from Best Buy. Has great reviews. I'd love to get another Samsung, but on Best Buys site, all the Samsungs run at least $100 more then comparable featured tv's.

my current samsung has been really good to me, but for the price, is the samsung really any better then the offbrand names such as the Vizio's, or best buy's in-house brand Insignia's?

Id bet the Samsung picture quality is better. Blacks are probably blacker, colors are likely more accurate, etc. Reliability on the Samsung may also be better.

IMO if you are looking at LCDs of the previously mentioned brands:
Samsung>Visio>Insignia

I've always liked the samsungs, but a 42" samsung 1080p 120hz is almost $200 more then the Insignia....

edit... Didn't find a 42" samsung, but the similar LG is $999, compare that to the $749 of the Insignia.

samsung 40" 1080p/120hz is $809

well I went over to American TV in Oak Creek since its right near my house browsing around. I picked up a 37" Samsung 1080p open box special for only $600 + tax. Seemed like a great deal, and its a perfect fit for the room. Looks great so far. Now if only my DirecTV was HDTV....

Dont be cheep Mike. Do your research. TV models come out every year just like cars. Personally I have had better pictures with Samsung ,Mitsubishi. 240 hz is tough to notice over 120.. Most of the reviews on various sites will have at least 3 or 4 Samsung in the top 10
