Well after 160,000 miles of abuse and a rear main seal leak, things aren't sounding good. I'll check things out tonight, its a REMOTE possibility the alternator is loose causing some knocking sound (more so considering it seems to be the loudest the first second the engine starts). But that aside I'm going to need a new shortblock or engine swap. I got some rebuild quotes and that doesn't make any sense given the value of the car. However, I do want to keep the car because it has completely rebuilt front suspension and a rebuilt transmission.

The car is a 2002 Honda Civic HX with a D17A2. There doesn't seem to be much available as far as used engines available because its a rare model. But I think the shortblock from the EX works too, the D17A2. I'm also open to B or K model swaps.

If anyone has any experience working on and swapping 7th gens I would more than open to hear what is possible. Either way I gotta get on this stat before it goes boom bitch. :punch:

My wife's car is a 04 EX Civic with 135k on it. Very easy to work on.

Personally i'd toss in a K20, but then you need a trans.

a k20 or k24 would make that car pretty darn fun to drive.

D series engine has been in production since the 80s. Your engine is the epitome of the D series.

I concur on a K series swap. IIRC, a K24 is cheaper than the K20. Talk to Bee, there is an issue with the shifter mechanism on some cars.

Anyone have a mechanic they can recommend for a dropping in a junkyard motor? A K series swap is just going to be too pricey.

Matt's Foreign Car Service has decent prices and are very professional.

Other than that, maybe Herman's North in Cedarburg. The owner, Chuck, is knowledgable.

I was thinking more along the lines of forum members. Lil evo is in on the action already =)

Swapping a motor isn't hard Nick. Did one in like 15 hours last summer start to finish. If LilEvo can't do it, we'll get it done.

It probably isn't hard, but its definitely not something I'm equipped to deal with. Can't really swap a motor in the apartment parking lot, have no tools and really its out of my skill set. I make a terrible mechanic, which is why I sell parts instead =)

I would love to do a K series swap, but it seems like there is a lot involved. The motor can be had for about twice as much as a D series, which is fine, but I think you need the transmission too (another 600-1k), mounts, wiring work, ecu work, etc etc etc... Most people have estimated the cost at around $6000 pre labor. So $6500 or so if you find someone that's done it a couple times that is willing to whore themselves out. (for the K swap)

At that point I might as well just sell the car as a roller and buy a bike and fox body.

As far as a junk yard motor, it looks like the damage will be about $700 or so plus labor. Which is tolerable. Hell I put that much into the front suspension. And that was just annoying, not critical like this.

give this junkyard a call.

Cousineua Auto Inc.

1-715-359-9419

That place is up here in Wausau, but they have a place in Appleton also.

I got a motor for my cavalier z24 there years back for 700$ and it had 10k miles.
My brother got a motor for his focus from there for 600$ and it had 2k miles on it , haha.

Worth a shot. I drive past that place everyday and they do have alot of new cars all banged up.

Good luck.

Consider Diamond Autos in Fond du Lac.

An engine for a car like yours should be less than 1k with low miles.

62,000mi d17a2 $530 w/ $50 core credit

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm checking to see if the d17a2 will drop in without any grief. I'm worried about the exhaust system giving shit or the transmission. I've got the question on a honda board waiting.

The D17A2 is the EX motor. Can't remember if the HX uses VTEC. The block should be the same but the head and wiring is different.

So a complete drop in D17A2 motor definitely will not drop in without issues then? :crying

If you get the wiring harness and computer, than it won't be too bad.
