i got open ended lug nuts with my new wheels. Billet Specialties 15x4 and
15x10. right now i have stock studs and they do NOT stick out past the lug nut... they are about 2 threds inside of it.. do i need new studs? or can i drive it the way it is? is it safe? or will i break the stud? rear tires have MT DR's on them..

NHRA is 3 threads past the open lugnut. But you need a minimal 6 full treads to be engaged to be safe on the street.

this is the type i have.. only 2 threds are showing on the inside of the end of the lug nut.

i guess whats the differance if i run it like it is or closed ended lug nuts? they don't stick out past those???

My opinion is if they are properly torqued they will be fine. Closed end lug nuts would be no different with the amount if thread in the nut.

If it were mine I would run them, but I'm not a certified master tech, I just play one on TV.

Studs are cheap, might as well replace them with some longer ones.

Put the ARP studs in!

NHRA rules state the stud must protrude the diameter of the stud into the nut.

i plan on it somtime soon. was just wondering if it would be ok to drive it the way it is.. the lugnuts i have are just like the ones i posted a link to. and only 2 threds of the inside of the lugnut is left showing.....

this is also correct when it comes to normal bolts to achieve the max holding capacity.

ie; 1/2" nut is roughly 1/2" in thickness, or 1/2" deep threads.

edit; i should note IDK about the nhra rules, but i know this is how normal bolts work.

so for maximum strength the bolt/stud should stick out at least 1/2" ????

no :thumbsup

when you measure the diameter of the bolt, and its 1/2", then for it to achieve its true streangth, it must be screwed in and locked down at least 1/2" into the threaded hole. If you ever take a tape measure and measure a nut 'height' wise, its usually spot on or right next to its corrosponding size.

i learned this from my dad when he was teaching me how to machine threads on a lathe and he had a bunch of charts

edit; idk if this holds true when you go into fine thread things, like lugnuts, but i was just throwing this out there i guess

Drive it until the wheels fall off. When the wheel is mounted, does the stud protrude 1/2" out? If so, you are fine.

Sorry about the wheels fall off comment.

it comes out past the wheel an inch. but not past the lugnut..
