Ours has gone senile. I'll be replacing it this weekend and so far my on-line research hasn't really helped distinguish one as the head and shoulders winner. Garmin and Tom Tom seem to get nothing but good reviews no matter what model is picked. I'm looking for any real world experiences. We don't need a lot of the high end types of features. No bluetooth or voice recognition etc needed.

Thanks for the help.

I like my Tom Tom, Free updates rock. Ill admit, the Burlington Bypass isnt on it, so it goes nuts when i take it, but i have driven to VA a few times and it has been spot on.

x2. Got a Nuvi 255w this last black friday. Love it. Still use and have my nuvi 200 from 3 years ago and I love that as well. Both still work flawlessly. DEF garmin.

I liked the Garmin over a Magellan I tried, both were the smallest versions. If I became more familiar with the Magellan I may have preferred it, but the Garmin was easier to see where I'm going, distance, change items, etc.

5" screen! That might be OK in a Crown Vic. I don't know that I'd be able to see out. :)

Looking at Garmin's it's seems kind of strange to see so many different models that are all priced very closely. (With a couple exceptions.) The 200 series look to be in my ballpark.

Thanks for all the input.

We have the Garmin also. We went with a higher model 370 or 460 something like that (was around $399, but BBuy had $150 off for some reason). It was the second from the top model. It worked great for the Power Tour. Never took us in the wrong direction and was able to get many variations of food joints along with look ups. My buddy got the top model and it was nicer since it had connection to the internet for weather, extra traffic news and MSN, but I didn't like the extra cables.

See you in June.

I hate cables.

June? You doing the tour again? We'll miss it. Taking my daughter back to CA to see where she was born for her 18th birthday.

Ahh, yes this will be our 5th Longhaul. It all depends on it I get a job and what happens from there. If I do not get a job, we are off and running. Money is all set and hotels are planned.

I have the Nuvi 200 from maybe 2-3 years ago and it still works pretty damn good. I think they have the best graphics and interface hands down.

Maybe they have improved then, Ive used both and found the TOM TOM to be easier to adjust and program.

I really dont think you can go wrong with either. Coke vs Pepsi.

This kind of mirrors what I've been finding on-line. (Though maybe a little more tilted toward Garmin here.)

I didn't even think to check Craigslist. I should probably do that.

Ha!! I stopped at Target over lunch and looked at the Garmins and Tomtoms. Wouldn't you know it, none of the Garmins could find Wind Lake!! Wind Point only. That's a problem. :durr

Anyone near theirs to try??

Larry,

If you want I have a 1390T Garmin I bought for Europe last year. It has the US and European maps. It has the 5" widescreen and the "T" is for traffic updates. You can borrow it for a week or two if you want to see if you like it before you commit.

PM me if you are interested.

Garmin stands behind there products if they fail. I bought a refurbished one on ebay and the screen went out. Called Garmin and they said it was a discontinued model and they replaced it with a new one that was far better and with a lot more features. I haven't heard much good about Tom Tom at all.

Don't get a Becker GPS. I can't update the maps and it has taken me the wrong way more than once.

I just bought a Garmin last week for work. I bought a Nuvi 1300 for about $160. It is a must in my job. I could be in Rockford in the morning and Iron Mountain, MI that night for night work. And it has never missed a beat. I like the fact you can pull up hotels and food on the fly. You can also set up waypoints like fuel.

But one problem is the route it takes sometimes, It says the shortest route, but there are shorter. And its ETA seems to be off sometimes. But Garmin's tech support said there is a update to fix that. So far I have been using it right out of the box and don't have any complaints. It always gets me home, when I can go home.

I wish it had a "bypass tolls function".

So in the end I don't see how you can go wrong with the 1300. Price is good, features are solid, and 4.5 screen is big enough to see the information without cluttering up the dash. (My IPASS does that very well).
