9 hours of surgery only to get bad news...

Well my wife's dad went in this morning at 5:30am for the long awaited surgeries but by 4pm when they finally finished we got the news nobody wanted to hear. Long story short, the cancer is too big and spread out to fix and they dont estimate him living more than 8-10 months. They had to repair his bile ducts and remove his gallbladder before they could even get into his pancreas to see how bad it was.

Debbie flew down there yesterday to see her dad but nobody was really expecting this and this is hitting her pretty bad after everything else the last 2 years. I dragged the family down to see him after his stroke last month(all related to the poor care he has been receiving...but another long story) and made sure she went to see him before surgery because you never know...He is only 62yrs old.

Please keep him and the family in your prayers.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and prayers. Mike, I do plan on taking you up on that offer soon.

So he just woke up about an hour ago and hasnt been told yet as he is way out of it but the 8-10 month projection is BEST case scenario IF he responds well to the chemo AND radiation. Not sure how many people would opt for that if they knew how shitty you feel while undergoing it just to know that nothing in the end will work.

I don't think I could do either one knowing I only have that much time left. Seems selfish but I would just want to have my pain managed and spend my last days with family and friends and not try to prolong my life for others. Extra prayers sent.

My father was given 6 months when he was diagnosed. He did the chemo and radiation to try to prolong his stay here on earth, but when it was near the end he told me he would have rather done without. He said he did it because he wanted to get all the time he could with his kids and grandkids but he ended up not making it the full 6 months and died on the 24th of December '96. He itched like crazy and lost the great head of hair he had. Maybe it works for some but if he had it to do over, he would have chosen no chemo/radiation and enjoyed the time he had more.
