BREAKING: First images of Ford's new Taurus-based Police Interceptor revealed!

2012 Ford Police Interceptor

Later today, Ford will officially unveil its new Police Interceptor at a private fleet sales event in Las Vegas, but the first images of the new vehicle were posted this morning on the company's website. As has been rumored for some time, Ford will be adapting the Taurus to take over for the aged Crown Victoria, which is finally being euthanized in September 2011.

At this point, we don't have any mechanical details on the new cop car. We wouldn't be surprised if Ford offers the Interceptor in two forms: a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 version with front-wheel drive could serve for all those local applications like liaison officers, supervisors, etc. where extra performance is not needed. The true Interceptors for highway patrol applications will probably use the SHO powertrain with the 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 and all-wheel drive.

This twin-turbo cop car would provide the first real performance challenge to the increasingly popular Dodge Charger while likely getting much better fuel economy (not to mention GM's upcoming V8-powered, RWD, Zeta-based cruiser), and we presume that the Blue Oval will field the new units with the obligatory upgrades, including a more robust suspension, cooling system, electrical system and, hopefully, brakes. We should have all the answers for you around lunch time.

Have you seen the new Taurus in person? It's a lot bigger then it used to be. The wheel base is only 2" shorter then the Crown Vic.

If you can find a loaded Taurus Interceptor, its getting the 367 HP SHO motor and the AWD. The new Caprice is supposed to be a 6.0 V8 with about 355-360 HP.. It should be pretty close.

Very true, Its gonna be very interesting to see how this car survives police duty, the new Caprice is definitely much more proven now than this new Taurus.

Considering the weight of the Taurus I'd think it should be pretty beefy and should do fine.

Only time will tell though.

When it comes to service and reliabilty and cost, I'll take the big v8 with RWD over the turbo'd AWD. Both would be fun, but for a municipality and for cost effectiveness, I'd rather go tried and true.

me and my brother (who has been a police officer for over 10 years) took out a new SHO last fall in hopes of ford coming out with one as a police model and he said it would be awesome for the northern states being the awd factor and it's still fast.

i hope they bring out a sho version.

I am far from turning into a Ford fanboy, regardless if I own a Lincoln or not, but I must say I really do like the new generation of cars from them...

It does seem a little strange that there is emerging a single set of power options tho... The 3.5l v6, then 3.7l v6 and the 3.5l Ecoboost v6 are basically powering everything but the mustang and trucks and whatever needs more power than a 4-banger...

I do understand it ultimately makes financial and economical sense for Ford to be doing that, just kinda strange to see all the lines deriving the same powerplants...

I also know the various calibrations for not only the engine but the transmission play just as much of a role in giving a certain vehicle a given 'feel' nowadays...

Nissan has been doing it for years with great success. Their VQ engine can be found in the Altima, Maxima, 350/370z, G35/G37 Coupe and Sedan, EX 35, FX35, Murano, and Quest. Financially it just makes sense.

As well as the frontier, xterra, and pathfinder. They have the 4.0l vq series.
