I was installing some new smoked headlights on my '95 cobra today and before I installed everything, I plugged it all in and checked it. The headlights WON"T go on! Everything else works. If I switch on the brights, nothing, HOWEVER, if I hold the brights switch back, the lights go on. As soon as I let go, they go off.

Any suggestions???

Thanks for the help,
Jason

Check the fuse box?

Didn't know which fuse it was and none of the books I have tell you which one so I pulled them all in both the interior and underhood and all are good.

If all that you're changing is the housings, that shouldn't affect the lights. Unless you jarred something loose while you were under there.
I'd start with: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31cEgBtBP3L._SL500_AA280_.jpg

Used that also, got no reading with lights on. Jiggled the wires around also thinking the same thing and still nothing. I just find it weird that they will go on only when you hold the brights switch back.......if only it turned with the steering wheel I could duct tape it back!!!!! Dammit!:goof:

If you're not getting power at all check all the headlight fuses for sure. Under the dash and under the hood. You're not using the ground wire as a ground to check the power are you? Ground the meter on something else being as it could be the headlight ground that is the issue as well.

umm here's a thought...have you checked the relays?

How do you check a relay if its bad or not and how do I find out which relay/fuse is for the headlights? Checked all fuses and they were good.

don't have experience with a mutang but my 95 ford pickup had one main fuse block under the hood with all the relays in it...they were marked on the underside of the cover....easiest way to check if one is bad is to swap with one you know is good...say your fuel pump relay (i assume the car runs lol)

I will try that right now!

Negative, not the relays.

ok not knowing a mustang what is the light switch situation?

my truck had the pull switch for the lows then to have brites you flick the column mounted lever forward ...and to flash you'd pull the column lever back (momentary switch)

Sounds like a headlight switch.

That is exactly what this is also.

Sounds like a headlight switch.

What is this switch you speak of???

Maybe knock a ground loose? But then I would assume your running lights wouldn't work either if it were a ground issue. :confused

Fog lights are on relay. Check the socket for the fuse make sure its getting power...And double check the fuse. I see its a 50 amp.

Here is the underhood diagram if u need.

Its possible the multi-function switch failed. Ill try and check into it more when I get home from work later. That would be the stalk that you pull back on to activate the brights.

Well after stew suggested a headlight switch, I checked up on where and how to get at it, apparently they are known for taking a crap like this, then ran to autozone and got one. I knew this was gonna be easy if this was the problem. Then I started thinking more about the bumping of wires.....I just rewired the gauges the other day so very possible it was me.
Get home and pull off gauge bezel, pull 2 bolts holding switch in, pull it out, 1 wire detached at a pretty shitty crimping job on a splice by 1 of the previous owners work. Repaired it, then saw 2 more splices, gave a light tug, both came right out!!! UGGHHHH:chair::chair:
Repaired those, hooked everything up again and they work like a dream!! Swapped out the switch anyways just for good measure.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!!!!

Yup, looks good too! While I was at it I did the quick rewire for the foglights. That was easy, just a little awkward trying to reach in the console and work with both hands and propping up a flashlight between my arms. lol. I'm sure it was a sight. Like a surgeon working.

Anyways,
Thanks again!
