Seems like a decent kid, especially compared to most 16 year olds these days...

Even if I had the means and my kid was deserving, I'm torn whether I would buy him something like that or not. I think it's cool the way they did it and he does seem like a good kid, but I think my kids would be better served in a decent car or truck for school and such. College graduation might warrent something like this though.

Again, this is just my opinion.

I hope there's a followup to this in a couple months. I want to see it wrapped around a tree.

I would never get my kid a car like this, no matter how deserving they might be. If they want one that bad, then I say they have to do what I did and save up for it. Untill then, they can deal with an escort or a focus.

I agree Wayne.

We all know peer pressure is a bitch. Your well educated and mannered son may have friends who lack in that area as much as you try to filter them they get through and they might have a larger influence on the kids thoughts and mistakes happen.

Also the jealous kids out there would probably destroy the car in the parking lot of his school keying it and shit

If my kids can succumb to the peer pressures of a bunch of whiny friends telling him to do burnouts, then I'm sorry, I failed as a parent. That's just my single/no kid opinion.

I know what I did when I was younger and knew the limits. (not saying I was a pro driver, just saying I know I did burnouts and stupid shit, but I never did 100mph down a street/freeway cause I knew it was retarded) I NEVER had a "normal" car growing up. But my father taught me the respect of a piece of metal and what it could do and couldn't.

I wouldn't be worried as much about the peer pressure thing ( although it would be an issue ) as much as I would worry about the damage by jealous kids and that sort of thing. If I was loaded though, who's to say I wouldn't get him one for a summer/weekend car and something normal for school/work.

I wish I had those problems is what I am getting at here. lol

Where's the Uncle in the Video that says "With great power, comes great responsibility."
Let the kid drive for awhile in something safe.
I was a good kid too, but I would have wrecked my dream car at that age.

I completely agree. Peer pressure is weak, I can't count how many times people tried to get me to smoke / drink since I was 15 and I have never done either to this day. Same thing with driving reckless, or anything kids try to get other kids to do.

I think both of you should recognize that the number of kids who resist the pressure is light years less than the ones who cant. The feeling to be accepted is huge in our society. Its a shame but its true.

Recently Oprah had a show (im out of work so yeah I watched it) and they had parents who believed and didnt believe in spanking. THey were secretly taping their children in a play room in the back to see how they acted. They had real guns that were empty and such. The kids were influnced to point the guns at others and hit the girls with the bats that were there and push other kids around. It was sickening and you could see the true shock on the parents face because they thought their kids would NEVER do that. They were being all polite but the longer they were there they mocked each others behavior

I'm just realistic and don't live in the fantasy world you do. I grew up with several guys who were giving cars they were too young and inexperienced to handle and watch them fuck them up. Nothing like giving 400hp to a 16 year old I suppose the loaded gun was just too obvious of a gift.

And for the record I never wished harm on the kid, I said the car would be wrapped around a tree. I've never met anyone at that age who truley appreciated the gift they were given. I've met a bunch of people who abused it though, and who even 20 years later still abuse it.

What happened to earning something? The kid seems nice and all, but unless he got a full ride scholarship to a good school and maintained that scholarship, he wouldn't be getting any prize from me. As someone said earlier, College Grad present maybe, turning 16, definitely not. Then again it was kind of cool how they presented it.

You could tell that kid is a decent kid. Even the "well-behaved" kids I know these days would have derided the guy that was flaunting the Camaro in the Best Buy parking lot. The kid didn't even have a hint of a sense of entitlement either.

I grew up on ATVs and bikes. Blasting through the woods at 60mph on a Banshee through the forests of Michigan with 20 other competitors. When I was that age I had a no-safety-feature-equipped truck that beat the Camaro by about 3lbs/hp when not spraying like the Orkin Man.

At age 16 though, I'd be too chicken to do much with a $35k car. I'd have looked at that with the realization that was 3 years of college in one bundle of joy. Now it's like 3 semesters at a no-one-has-ever-heard-of-it school like MSOE. I'd probably spend all my time polishing it and doing my homework in it. I'd actually be more likely to fuck it up now than when I was 16. For some kids, having something like this teaches them great responsibility and knowing that others (namely, parents) trust and respect them. Some kids value that respect and trust... and want to keep it. Others earn a sense of wanton entitlement.

When I turned 16, I got to pick my own loaded gun. And I got a Yamaha Blaster for my 12th birthday, that to this day I still have. When other kids were busy stealing money to buy weed, I was saving up for a set of nerf bars.

Just because you were a snot-nosed puke when you were a kid, your parents were worthless at raising children, or you had a bunch of loser friends with loser parents when you were a kid doesn't mean this particular family suffers the same problems.

You spend enough time with your kids, set rules, and instill the fear of god. There needs to be a certain level of mutual respect between a father and son also.

mostly the fear of god thing..

oh, and is wrapping a car around a tree usually a harmless endeavor?

fwiw, I'd never give my kid a car like that at age 16. Even if I've won the lottery, their first car would be a powerless, but safe wonder. Once the kid shows he/she doesn't drive recklessly/speed/etc, then I'd consider helping them purchase a car with a little more oomph.

And cause you guys saw a 10 minute clip of this kid you automatically assume he's a level headed responsible kid?

And the family broadcasting this on youtube to show off, doesn't send any signals either huh?

Hope you guys are right. But odds are the kid is going to do what 16 years olds do. Something stupid.
