How the HELL do you get them to shut their face? My mom wanted to take my grandma out of town for the weekend and I got stuck with the dog, an 11 year old yorkshire terrior. Its been whining / barking / annoying the PISS out of me since it got here 2 hours ago. Any ideas? The dog hasn't been away from grandma more then an hour in its 11 years, heck she gets up 3 times every night to let the dog out not cause it needs to go, but cause it wants to. That sure as hell ain't happening here :thumbsup

She should have left a pillow case of hers or something with you... something with her scent on it.

She should have taken the dog with her :) The dog is too dumb to eat when its hungry, I have a feeling its going to be a LONG weekend.

For an older dog like this, you're pretty much in for a long weekend.

What you could try is to take the little guy for an hour walk...tire it the heck out. With that, it's more likely to feel compelled to sleep, thus a loose form of "denning" in which he/she begins to feel more comfortable and secure.

After the walk, make sure to give it a mini rawhide too, if he/she tolerates it...the exhaustion, the bonding/submission to you during the walk (exert control over him...not vice versa), and the mental stimulation of chewing both will have a calming effect...and begin to make your home more like a "den" to the little guy, thus making him/her calmer, less anxious.

Generally when I take a new dog in, I'll walk/run for at least an hour, sometimes two....if it whimpers, I give a quick (but not harsh) correction letting it know I won't tolerate their anxiety (pack leaders set the tone...if I worry, everyone worries...if I'm calm, everyone should be calm). I also get the dogs bed/blanket as the familiar scent generally helps....

Problem with this dog though is it doesn't walk. It was always a lap dog and is TOTALLY lost when on a leash. Once the leash is on, the dog just sits still and I don't have the patience to try and teach an 11 year old 7 pound dog how to walk. It literally just sits there.

Make sure the collar is tight enough so it doesn't slip over his head, and drag him till he figures out he has feet...it'll come to him :thumbsup

Eric. A friend of mine swears by this when he travels with his dogs. I think he said PETCO has it.

Eric you could put it in the same room with my dogs. Either bailey would chase it till it dropped or brownie would try to hump it till it dropped, either way the lil fugger would stop whining. lol

Yup, after listening to the dog all last night we decided it would be best to take it to grandmas house and let it sit in the kennel by itself. Sucks for the dog, its not her fault she is mentally retarded and was never trained how to behave.

Ive owned nothing but dovermans and rottweilers all my life that will attack anything that isin't my family entering my yard, pretty mean dogs. Also,
where I grew up there were wild dogs all over the street....so unless you have a pit, im pretty confident my hand will be ok :P and no I dont abuse my dogs they are pretty old but still act like pups around me, still have to keep the dominance present though. Maybe its because I hate spoiled dogs as much as I hate spoiled rich kids.

The only workable solution more than likely, 11YO dog isn't going to learn much. Can't teach an old dog new tricks:rolf

Tiff says she has an "Ace" for the dog, traquilizer or "doggy downer".
Says says the dosage is for a large dog but....it will do the job :)

Google it, im home today.
