Here is another possibility JUST as rediculous ....

The Japanese envoy signs the document of surrender on board the
USS Missouri in Tokyo bay. September 2, 1945 :

Shortly afterward, a secret society of Ninjas is formed, their job, to
seek revenge on the round eye. Needing financial backing, they get
with Kiichiro Toyoda, founder of the Toyota Company. Kiichiro chose
to use the spelling "Toyota" to throw off the "simple minded" round
eyes, so they could NEVER trace the Company origins back to him,
it was a stroke of genius. The plan was decades in the making, to
earn the trust of the round eye, they were to sell quality cars at a
bargin prices. This needed an additional source of funds, in 1946, a
few months after the Surrender was signed, an electronic company
by the name "Sony", which stands for "Slaughter Only Non-Yen" (in
reference to their currency), was formed. In the years following the
Toyota Company weaved itself into American society, going to any
lengths to be preceived as a US based company in both campaigns
and promotions. Once they had the people of America fooled, they
started to plot a way of revenge - computers.

They didnt think that the American people would be open to giving
up direct mechanical control of their cars, so seeing the popularity
of computer gaming stations rise in the US, "S.O.N.Y" unveiled their
"Playstation" in 1994 - this was to trick the youth, and eventually
their parents, into accepting a computer operated car on a screen
is no different than real life. What we are seeing now, is the very
precise implementation of their plan. First simple "accidents" to see
if the programing and remote controls are operating, second stage
is to up the ante, multiple crashes on the same day, to see how it
is received, and then, the final plan, August 6th, 2010, Toyota will
launch an all out destruction plan, on the 65th Anniversary of the
bomb dropped on Hiroshima, aimed at the American people. The goal
is to activate the over 15 million "trigger" vehicles into road carnage.
The resulting death toll should reach into the millions easily, and will
allow the Ninjas to reap their revenge for the 140,000 who died. The
testimony of the President of Toyota today was to put the people
at ease, his "sorry", so powerful a word coming from a company so
set on "safety", turned the events around. The stock market made
a sharp recovery, and Toyota stock moved upward. The round eyes
have gone back to their daily lifes, feeling the warm and fuzzy glow
of a Corporate heart-felt "sorry".

Or maybe its just poor designs.
