View Full Version : awd for under 4k?

CarbonRX

looking to buy an awd car for under 4k but the only 2 feasable cars i can really think of are the eagle talon tsi(dont start modifying), or a subaru 2.5 rs. im leaning towards the rs right now but i dont like the fact that its replacement the wrx has almost double the hp and a full second less 1/4 mile pass time.
so any cars im overlooking?

FWIW both the RS and TSi aren't exactly stellar choices if you are planning to keep the car as a reliable daily driver.

The RSes have the 2.5 known for blowing headgaskets left and right, and the TSi is well... a DSM.

What do you plan to do with the car? Build it or use it as a daily?

Well they don't autox in the winter anyways so there is no need for any of that.

To be perfectly honest you would probably do best with a FWD honda with winter tires for the winter time and some autox tires in the summer. Nice and reliable, cheap to modify and maintain and handle well. I also think they would be more competitive in their class then the RS or TSi.

Seeing as he has a budget in mind I don't think he's intersted in being competative. For me I'd be searching for a GTi, Prelude, Integra, RX7, 240, yada yada yada, to serve dd/ax dutys for under four stacks. A foxbody with a stock drive line and upgraded chassis might not be bad. But what ever you do, being competative on a low budget prolly aint gonna happen.

They are fun for the 6 +/-2 days of snowy roads per year, but you can also get snow tires on any 2wd and do just as well.

its for fun, i wanted a car i could throw some coilovers on and some sticky tires and have fun with. i have the rx7 but its a turbo and i think that autox would be too much of a bitch with that car due to how easy it is to get sideways(i would rather spend the money it would take to make it handle corners well enough for autox on power mods), i think it would be more at home on an actual track. now if it was a non turbo that would be a different story but i would rather have something else different and rare.

First off I gotta tell ya anyone that makes blanket statements like civics are gay always makes me wonder.. It's only a matter of time before a well done civic puts ur rx7 in it's place.

In any case I still think a FWD Honda (maybe not a civic if you are that repulsed by them) is probably your best bet. Since it is your DD I would really value the reliability most of all since you all ready have a fun car. Plus just as you said it is pretty easy yo spend a little cash on a Honda and end up with a car that is well setup for an auto x, again all while being reliable. Maybe a prelude? Those are kind of rare.

yeah once the turbo kicks in. you do not have a turbo so you don't have that problem:rolleyes: i had a gxl back about 2 years ago and that would be much better to autox with due to the much more stable powerband.
if i did use my turbo rx7 i would have to baby the throttle in and coming out of the corners so it doesn't lose traction and kick sideways once the turbo starts to spool...
i know how to drive my own car.

Everyone needs to baby the throttle to autox. :durr You can't just go out there and mat the throttle to the floor everywhere you go. Hell even my wife's 4-cylinder accord couldn't do that.

FWIW I have seen people auto-x in cars with double (maybe even triple) the horsepower of a turbo FC. It's all about the driver (and vehicle setup). There really shouldn't be anything preventing you from using the RX7 to autocross.

If you want to go WOT all the time, you might want to look into drag.

He's right. Everyone needs to baby the throttle in AutoX. I know a few guys that run it and non can really go WOT and if they can it's only for a second or two tops anyways. There is a nice mix of cars they have too from AWD Evo's & STi's, to FWD Civic's, Nissan's, and Focus's, and RWD Miata's and Mustang's. Even a LS1 powered Rx7 that runs on race tires.

Personally I'd say just have some fun in your Rx7. It's all about fun anyways. But if your adamant on getting a different car a cheap DD/AutoX car would probably end up being either a Civic or a Focus. Both can be had for cheap, both are quite reliable, and both have a large aftermarket. However neither are fast.

yes i believe base cobalts don't come with turbos so ik its a spacey concept and all but google goes a long way.

not trying to go wot through the corners, i know thats really difficult on a small little autox track. point is that in autox most corners are taken in second gear, and in 2nd gear in a turbo rx7 once the car hits full spool about 3000 rpm the car needs to be pretty fucking straight IE like 90% through the corner, or it will start to lose rear traction and i will get sideways, losing seconds off my lap time. yes i could baby the throttle but that would slow me down just as much through the corners.
i want an awd because i want a car that i can hit the apex of a corner and immediately hammer back on it as i am still taking the turn, maybe a little bit of heel-toe practice. i realize i could corner and auto-x just as well with a fwd, but fwd sucks, torque steer sucks, grocery getters and economy cars are all fwd, noone races lemans, jgtc, dtm, nascar, f1 with fwd...
i also want awd so i can have a nice winter car to drive, sure argue that a fwd with some snow tires is just as good, but thats bullshit.

Dude, I don't even know where to start. You have pretty much let everyone know (on your own) that you don't know what you are talking about.

There is nothing wrong with taking a weak ass, close to stock, turbo II to an auto-x. First off the thing doesn't have that much power, second it hardly makes any torque , and 3rd of all it is extremely well balanced and predictable. People have been auto crossing with RX7s for years and years and years and they do extremely well. PERIOD. Any competent driver can take a TII and push it around an auto-x course faster than an AWD TSi or RS. Again I have seen people with 500+ hp cars at miller park... But then again what would they know. They would probably be faster with a 200hp AWD TSi :durr

While I have no problem with people with a lack of automotive knowledge (everyone has to start out somewhere, we were all in that position)... what does bother me is when those people ask a question and get a response they don't like and argue about how everyone else is wrong. If you didn't want to hear our opinions then don't bother posting.

Ultimately it is your money and you are free to do whatever you so choose with it. So do whatever makes you happy.
Just don't be surprised if someone with a $2000 civic whips down on you an auto-x while still being a better DD.

BR3W CITY
03-02-2010, 07:25 AM
I had a TII for a while, and although it was extremely fun, at ~170hp it wasn't exactly a beast. That car handles GREAT tho, its just fine for autocross.

If you want awd for a daily or just to have it, you can probably find an older a4 quattro for just under that.

And this right here is 100% of the reason CarbonRX is not having such a good start on this board. The people on the board are generally trying to help, so if you post a question they are giving honest answers to help you out. You have to be prepared for the fact that you might not get the answer you wanted, but if you think you already know everything, then why even ask in the first place? If you're just looking for the group to validate your opinion, be prepared for some to disagree with you. They aren't disagreeing just to be contrary, they're giving you their opinion (that you asked for) that is truly meant to help you make the best decision possible, even if it wasn't what you had in mind.

Why do you always have a picture of a mentally challeged/downs person for your avatar?

Do you have something aginst them? This is the second time now.

If you are trying to say that you are retarded just take a picture of yourself and throw it up there.

I'd be willing to beat the guy with the Superman outfit would kick the shit out of you.

i believe that was put in there by mods.
