Well , it's time to "turn up the wick" on Jesse's YFZ 450 !

The ATV is a 2008 YFZ 450 SPX with about 20 hours on it.....

Factory break in is done now and we are going to install some real "go fast " parts on this Mather Facker !

Stay tuned for pics and vids of the build up !

The first parts going on will be a aftermarket exhaust system from Monster Pipe , fabricated aluminum airbox with conical K & N filter , Dyno Jet Master Kit carb jets .

These mods will really wake up the YFZ !

Should net us about a 10 HP gain !

I want to really get into tuning ATV engines for power.....I have been learning as much as I can about tuning online and it's really interesting to see how much there is out there....

Watch this post , as the parts come in I will update with pics....

Here is the 450 we are starting with.....I want to be sure we don't do anything to mod it that makes it less of a trail machine since we ride state trails in summer months....

I installed the new HI FLOW Airbox today.....I added some extra touches to improve things a liitle...

I added some heat shield barrier tape to the airbox side that faces the exhaust pipe to try and keep that intake as as cool as it can be....

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e93/DynoTom/100_2543.jpg

I also added some rubber isolators to the airbox mouting screws , the factory airbox has a similar set up but , the aftermarket airbox did not..

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e93/DynoTom/100_2544.jpg

The HUGE K & N fliter is really a tight fit into this box ! My Raptor uses the same filter but, the airbox is quit a bit longer ...

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e93/DynoTom/100_2545.jpg

Here is the stock YFZ 450 airbox , as you can see it's very restrictive and has only a small air intake opening on it ....

Here it the new set up installed complete , lots of AIR to breath in now !

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e93/DynoTom/100_2548.jpg

Here is the underside shot where the exhaust will be , you can see the heat barrier tape is placed perfect to keep temps down a little....

I also installed our Raptors A - Arm gaurds .....These are Pro Armor , I had to modify the outward mounting points as I have a 4 inch lowering kit on it....They are very quality pieces and will work very good I'm sure.....

As soon as I get the new pipes on Jesse's YFZ I wanna get it out to do some test runs .....I need to jet the carb in and fine tune it.....I have the huge master jet kit from Dyno Jet with tons of jets and needles so I'm sure we will get this thing tuned in perfect.....Still more mods to come on this , we will go into the engine but, prolly not for this season....

Today we did some test and tune on Jesse's YFZ.....I think we have it pretty close on jetting but , we are still lean....We are going back tommorow to tune some more....

Here are some pics from todays tests....

We needed some WOT runs to make sure the jets are right.....Power was great low to mid range but , would stumble slightly at the top end.....Here is some vids for the speed runs...Tommorow we will have this thing dailed in , we have to do a needle groove change and some possible main jet changes to make that happen.....I'm going to set this up to be slightly on the rich side to be safe.....

Today we did some more test and tune on Jesse's YFZ....We changed the needle groove to #5 and went back to the 155 main jet....It seems to be close but, we do have a slight stutter just off idle.....We will now install a Boysen Quick Shot II pump cover to get rid of the stutter bog off idle....The stock accel pump cover is so small that it runs low / out of fuel and that is where the stutter comes from....I just ordered the Boysen Quick Shot so within a week or so we will go back and see what it does....I also got a new set of main , pilot and leak jets on order to fine tune to jets.....

Boss was talking about doing some 1/8 mile runs @ GLD on the ATV's....Today Jesse spent some time doing launches...It's going to be quite tricky keeping the ATV's off the rear bumper but, I still wanna try it.....

I'd say your probably just better off letting the clutch take it on the chin a little more for the launch, you don't want to jump out of the beams.

Yep , we are going to have to slip that clutch some to get off the line....

I installed the BOYSEN QUICK SHOT II ! This will give a huge shot a fuel to the bottom end to get rid of the stumble it used to have off idle .....

Here is the QS2 accel pump cover assembly next to the stock one . You can see the difference in how much fuel the QS2 can hold compared the stock part...

I just picked up more Raptors for my collection - I have a 700, 660, and 350 now plus I still have that Warrior you sold me - not the fastest thing but its a great reliable loaner vehicle for friends when they go with me.

Our schedules never seemed to line up last year but let me know when you guys are heading somehwhere and I will do the same!

Yep we gotta get out on the atvs this year for sure ! I got ur pm about the rims tires you are looking for and yes I will probably have extra tires and rims for you.

Let me know, I'm just looking for something decent that isnt bent up for now. I will probably eventually drop big cash on some nice ones for my 700 someday but I could really use something for now to replace the worn out tires and bent/wobbly rims on this 660 I just bought.

Theres a place on Ebay listing sets of 4 ITP Holeshot HDs, and ITP T9 Polished Rims for $479 plus $50 shipping... Seems like a great deal to me? Any opinions?

P.S. Hijack - This is now a general Yamaha ATV lover's thread!

Yep , I bought 3 sets off that same guy and they were a decent deal.....I'm switching to beadlock rims on my 700 and Jess's 450...The beadlocks are very nice as you can change out tires very easy ( unlike non beadlocks that are a bitch to mount / dismount ) and you can air down beadlocks for extra traction in sand or mud if needed....

Yeah I would love me some Hiper or Douglas beadlocks, blue ring to match my ride.... drool. Unfortunately that would be closer to a grand and I just can't do it right now.

I took the YFZ for a little test run and I have to say Holy FAWK !:eek:

There is no off idle studder , it pulls much harder than before !

Jess will do some WOT testing tommorow on it and check the plug from from I could tell in my test it's running very good....

I'm pretty amazed at how fast this ATV is with just minimal mods on it....I want to talk some stuff over with Jess after he tests it and see if he thinks this level of power will be enough?

We were going to add a high comp piston 13.5 to 1 and stage 4 cams and stage 4 head port but, to tell you the truth I don't think it's needed as the power she has now is PLENTY !

Out of the hole this ATV is a fuggin monsta , instant power , no lag , no studder just pulls and goes !

I don't know how Jess's YFZ will do up against my 700 but, it sure feels just as fast if not faster......Keep an eye out here for a future drag race showdown between his YFZ and my 700R.....It will be interesting ....

Jesse's YFZ is all ready to run ! Final test and tune turned in some very good spark plug color and she really runs PERFECT !

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e93/DynoTom/jesse017.jpg

It has amazing power pull right off the line now, it starts up instantly , second gear 1/2 throttle shifts will pull the wheels a foot in the air....I have to say when we first bought this YFZ and it was stock and not broken in , I was not impressed with the power it had....After it was broken in it got a little faster but, the big wake up were the mods we did....Now I don't think we will mod it as much more as we thought we were going to as it's just a nice pump gas good running and fast machine.....

Now its time to focus on my Raptor....

I picked up a pair of Doodle Bug minibikes to mess around with.....I have to say these little things are pretty fun and would make great pit bikes....These things are cheap to buy , easy to fix with very few parts ....Northern Tool had them for $249 each....It was funny to watch guys with 1000 + HP cars ride these 3 HP minibikes and have so much fun !
