so i am thinking that i am going to buy a fun gun. trying to decide between going .308 or .223. like i said it will be a fun gun. I know that .223 rounds are cheaper and normally i would go that way. what is keeping me from doing that is the extra range of the .308. guy at work here tells me that his .223 starts to drastically drop at 500 yards and that is the max that he will shoot. In your opinions is the extra price of a .308 round and gun worth the extra range?? i do have access to a 3 mile shooting lane, so i would be able to use it. are there any long distance rifle ranges around?? just tossing ideas around in my head and i figure i would check with the gun guys.

.223 is pretty cheap to shoot but a 308 still packs a punch way out there. im actually looking at a rem 700 sts dm at gander looks alot like so. It all depends on what you want to do with it.

well i think it would be cool to get some people together and do some 1000 yard plinking, but if everyone has 223s it wouldn't be so fun?!?!

I think this is going to be my next long distance "fun gun". I've been reading a lot of good things about the 338 Lapua round.

what is a 338 round?? not familiar at all with rifles. how expensive are the rounds compared to 223? what is the range like??

and fiveonut, i wish. this will be my first gun like this, so if i like it, that will come in time. as for some long plinking, i got the places to shoot!

People confuse large calibers as being flatter shooting, not realy.

Larger calibers like lofting a softball will be easier to dunk, less apt to drift in wind. Take a good look at bullet drop at 300/400yrds with all calibers zeroed in at 200yrds. 223,308,30-06,338,50cal...look at all of them at 500yrds with a 200yrd zero and watch the drop.

Flattest shooting, least likely to drift at 1000 yrds will always be 6 and 6.5mm class bullets, not 1/2" bore armor piercing car killers.

There's a reason why prairie dog hunters (small traget) use a 22-250 under 45gr bullet at 300yrds for a 3" target, 300WM looks cool on paper but drops 6" more at same distance.

this is why im torn... ive always loved the .308 (first rifle ive ever fired) but the 6.5 creedmoor (not sure about grendel?) has caught my eye since id love to get into longer distance shooting.

Ballisticaly superior to most anything discussed on this board, close to 6.5x284 ballistics without the barrel burning powder. Its being used in 1000yrd high power competitions right now.

i was talkin zombies at work today... and when it comes down to it, all depends on what range they are from ya. afterall my zombie plan puts me at cabelas so the choices are endless :D

im with coop... too easy to get trapped, and remember i am legend, they can use the manikins as traps... there are many open spaces with semi decent elevation changes (holy hill, etc) to conceal and shoot from around there... although a quick stop with a large group to cabelas isnt a bad idea. also that gander mtn isnt too far if you have a car.

You don't hunt prairie dogs, you shoot them. That said, my .223 w/24" SS bull barrel makes hits at 350-400 yards consistantly, at 500 yards you need to know how to use your tool to make it work for you, but it will do the job.

I'd say between the two, .223 would be my choice. I was a total .223 lover until I got turned onto the .204 Ruger caliber. Then I bought one, shot it, and I LOVE that caliber now to the point of having 2 of them. Granted the .223 is, and probably always will be, cheaper to come by ammo-wise but the ballistics comparisons between the two give the .204 a slight nod. About 10" less drop at 400 yds.

Either are going to be tack drivers but if you want something a little different, give the .204 a look.

so i am pretty sure i am going .223. not only to save a couple bucks and be able to use that money for optics, but since it is my first gun of this kind, i think it would be smarter to start smaller and work my way up. thanks for all the info guys. will keep you posted as to what i pick up. i am really liking the look of the dmps panther little sass.

if anyone has anything that they want to sell or know of any good gun shows coming, let me know.

For killing deer, no doubt.

For varmints and long range accuracy off a bench, I have to respectfully disagree.
