View Full Version : Bad news! - no reverse 4L80E

Reverse just went out on my 98 2500 Chevy 4x4 Silverado. (4L80E Trans I believe).

I just finished plowing the driveway. Cleaning up the end of the Col-de-sac. It went into reverse, started moving backwards slowly (I wasnt hard on it), and then I heard a clunk. Now there's nothing there. Reverse lights still go on. But it behaves just like neutral. There was no sign of any kind of failure previous to this.

So BCM, what's the best course of action here? Get a rebuild? Have them just fix reverse? Take it to shop XYZ?

This is seriously going to screw with my RX7 funds. :ripped::chair::mad:

If you are not going to fix it yourself and no one here will, I have someone that will and is certified.

That sucks. I know Korndogg (Mark) got his fixed at a place in Oak Creek. Maybe he could point you in the direction he took?

How many miles are on the truck? Just wondering, that since you have to pull it out anyway, wouldn't it just pay to do the full rebuild vs fixing one part and then maybe having to repeat it all again if something else fails.

Thats where I took my truck. Great guys there. They had it over a week which sucked but it wasn't their fault. They couldn't get the torque converter I needed in time before memorial day weekend I think so they had to wait until after the weekend to get it.

133k - mind you there's some plowing miles in there. and in the summer I haul big loads of firewood.

I know a few guys that work at ATD, if you're interested in that route. PM me and I'll get you their contact.

Tim at T&S transmission on HWY 100 next to Culvers (Foresthome) does excellent work.

Didn't TNS transmission used to be in St. Francis? If its the same guy, then that gets my vote

I'd say to a full rebuild, those transmissions are dirt cheap.

It's like $400 in parts to do a decent rebuild. If you broke any hard parts (probably a shell) add a hundred bucks. Can do it in a day if you're rusty or a weekend if you drink too much.

i will give you 1,000 for the truck as-is :D
just rebuild the whole trans. probably easier to do it all over just the reverse part.. its all got to come out anyway right??

1950 for a rebuild installed from TNS is the first quote I have.

He suspects the reverse band is gone due to it being a plow truck. repeated forward and reverse.

Did you call John and ask him for a price? I sent you a PM with his contact number, ask Coop's brother about him.

try a place called e.t.e reman they give you a new one they get the old one. I put one from them in my mountaineer and got it for 1100 when the trans shops wanted 14-1800 for a rebuild . they have 3 year 100,000 mile warranty on all trans.

Personally if going the reman route, I'd go with Jasper's (http://www.jasperengines.com/automatic-transmissions.php) engine and trans...they build a good product.

Jasper stuff is pretty nice. I did once end up with a SBC 350 that had mismatched (different casting numbers but same specifications) from them. I believe there is a Jasper distribution house on Moorland in Newbertucky.

Anyway, the 4L80e isn't that hard to rebuild. Harder than a TH350, TH400, or 727... but not like a bandless transmission.
