I made a brand new site dedicated to all things chicken wings. I lo'me some chicken wings. My buddies and I will get together and fry up a giant vat and we're constantly going out to places around here (Magoo's, etc) so we decided we were going to start making trips to wing places locally and maybe across the country.

So check it out. Bookmark it. Comment. Keep watching.

The site is only a week old so there's probably some technical issues here and there. And I'm not a professional writer, just a dude that loves wings, so there's bound to be some grammatical errors.

aWingThing.Com (http://www.awingthing.com/)

When I was in Detroit last month my friend and I went to a place downtown called Sweetwater and had their wings. This is really what inspired me to make a site all about wings. We couldn't stop talking about how awesome these wings were.

My friends and I are planning a trip to Detroit in the summer probably so they can all try'em too.

I'll be doing a article about them in the near future for sure. Jer and I created the ULTIMATE wings one night while we were there.

Magoo's is my favorite place right now. The place in Detroit would be...if it wasn't a 6 hour drive.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays night at " The saloon " in oak creek on Howell & Rawson has some of the best wings, if you go order your amount and ask for DRY RUB !!!

And then pick your sides : BBQ, Hot orTerriyaki

Captin Ron is the cook and its his creation, actually won a St. Fair thing last year. Service is not extremely fast because there are only 2 fryers but I don't care....

Grainger's Pub and Grill on Loomis and Howard(I think) surprised me, some of the better spicy garlic dry rub wings I've had in a long time.
My favorite style is when they're not breaded, yet crispy, and not dripping in sauce.

BTW, had WingStreet last night in Bayview, it's like 2 blocks from my house. Never again.

So the site has been up for a almost two months now and things are going well. The gang has been able to get to a lot of places around the area and we've had some damn good wings. We still have a ton of places to go to, but we're working on it.

Today I received a pretty cool email from the owner of Legend Larry's, Legend Larry himself. If you don't know Legend Larry's they won First Place Extra Hot, First Place Hot, Second Place Medium, and 2009 Over-all Fan Favorite at the National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo NY. That's some pretty impressive stuff considering how many entries are submitted. Anyway I thought it was pretty cool that the site is getting some recognition however small at this point.

Going to Left's tonight. We've got about a half dozen places we've had suggested to us.

Pizza Hut's Medium Buffalo breaded wings are phenomenal. I also make a mean wing right here in my kitchen.

We tried the Pizza Hut wings (unofficially) and we weren't happy with the quality of the wing. We all liked the flavor but the wings were kinda weird with like extra pieces on'em (not trimmed well), etc. We'll have to do an official review at some point. Maybe pit all the "delivery" wings up against each other.

Just saying what happened. I changed it though.

Their pizza is pretty good too. The cheese fries are awesome. They don't skimp on the cheese.

so she got a bad review because she didnt want a stranger taking her picture while at work?

That's my review. We review places according to their wings, atmosphere, and service. Considering she asked a bouncer to come TAKE my camera and the way she reacted, yes.

If you go somewhere and have a bad experience with a waiter or waitress and someone asks you about the place you would say something right?

so the service was bad because she didnt want her picture taken and asked to have it deleted? IMO, thats not rude, taking her picture without her consent is. She probably thought that it might end up on the net in a not so flattering way, which anyone here can attest to happens alot. Its your site to review and write what you please but IMO, you were out of line for taking her pic in the first place without permission.

She wasn't our waitress so I didn't have a chance to ask. She just happened to be the person who brought them out. She's never been very friendly anytime I've been in there either. Of all the places we've no one has ever had a problem with it. I just felt it needed to be pointed out.

And I said they were the best in West Allis, not the whole area.

it does smell better in there though. You can at least breath without feeling like you're inhaling cancer.

And you are entitled to your opinion. Like I've said, no one has ever had a problem with it before.

For the record I do normally ask people if I can take their picture. I guess I just figured since myself, and the people I was there with go there so often it would be the last place I'd have an issue with. Live and learn.

However I am editing the article accordingly because their service is not bad. This was the first experience. it just happened to happen while I was doing the review.

We also notice that they raise their prices on the wings regularly....though $4 on Wednesdays for 10 wings is a deal. The grilling process is still what makes theirs so good IMO. Good review and I am with you 100%....Tough Guy are the only ones I order. I'm sure the other flavors are good too but I couldn't tell you because I only order the Tough Guy wings. The no-smoking inside the place has made it much better for eating too

Thanks.

I saw on their facebook page the wings are $.40. What were they before? I don't seem to ever get there on Wed.

Wings are $0.40 on Wednesdays. If you have them any other day they'll be $8.29 for 10.

The owner Rich has done a little painting and remodeling since the smoking ban went into effect and has added several new big screen tv's.

Definitely a bar atmosphere with great wings

Which waitress got huffy about the picture? Their all pretty easy to deal with.

Shelby has ALWAYS been super nice to me when I've been in there either with the guys or my wife. It was Sam that I was referring to. When I meant AREA I meant all of Milwaukee. All I hear is how they are the best in the AREA from most on BCM here.

I like them because they are the biggest wings Ive had around here and they do not have the coting that Magoos put on them. Plus you get 2 dozen for like 10 bucks, and me and my large friend cant finish them.

The only coating Magoo's uses is their seasoning or sauce for bbq or teriaki

Magoo's is the best in the Milwaukee AREA that I've had and I'll try wings anywhere when i get the chance.

Quality ranks higher that quantity any day of the week for me.

Of all my reviews, Points East as had the best wings in the area. But I haven't been to Mcgillicuddys yet. It's on the list. Although I don't usually like giant wings. I like a higher sauce to wing ratio personally.

Tried the wings at the Brass Monkey tonight. Typical deep fried with a bottle brand buffalo sauce. Nothing to write home about.

They did have a special of grilled pork wings that was killer. There cut from the pork shank (http://www.farmlandfoodservice.com/pdf/kc_wild_wings.pdf) and have whats similar to a rib bone in them, three to an order. super tender, came with three sauces, asian zing, bbq and buffalo sauce. Yummmm

Can you recommend me some wings? I like mildly spicy sauceless breaded wings- with the spices in the breading. Have you ever had KFC's hot wings? Those are so far my favorite. Ponderosa had good wings too, IMO. I know I'm against popular opinion here.

I honestly wasn't fond of Magoos wings myself, not so much the flavor but the quality. The wings were a little burnt and were tough.

I'm just looking for some good breaded sauceless wings with a little kick.

Captain Ron is what he calls himself. He came out and we talked a little bit. Real nice guy. You can tell he takes pride in his wings and that will be in the review as well.

Lets face it, you can get good or even great wings at a lot of places. But when the atmosphere is cool, the owner comes out and talks to you, or the cook, and the waitress/bartenders are cool that's the kind of stuff that brings you back.

We have more then a dozen places on our list to go to so getting back to a place we've already been is pretty rare right now. The Saloon will be one of these places though.

jbiscuit and I checked out Johnny Hammers for lunch today. Ordered up some extra hot grilled and some spicy bbq grilled. Very good flavor.
The extra hot is a nice crunchy wing with just enough heat. The bbq had a more subtle bite to it.
One thing you can come to notice at different places is the quality of their ranch dressing. Johnny's is a bottle ranch dressing where Magoo's seems to be a ranch dressing made with sour cream which is my preference.
In all Johnny's will prove to be a danger for me as i live a few blocks away and I'll find myself there often.

I am also going to work out an official rating system and always mention their wing nights.

This last year has been a learning process for me.
Could I offer some suggestions?

Instead of making it one of those things where all of you get together and all of you hash it out and one writes one article...

Shorten it. Make it a process where each can write a blurb with an easy to follow rating system somewhat like you have now (ie, service, sauces, etc). This way not everyone has to go at the same time, and you can cover more places on different nights (so if service or wings is variable, this approach might reveal that). This way you guys can canvas an area more effectively...

So after "Jon" reviews a place, maybe a week or two "bob" has the time to swing by, etc.

Not to say that all of you guys shouldn't get together for a review...do it as frequently as you always do. But this will give the site greater scope and more to read.

And then if "Jon" is at applebee's and wants to write a review, hey, that just adds that much more to the site.

Maybe put a numeric scoring system that weighs different categories differently based on what you guys think makes a places great/good/etc...and have a "top 50" or whatever as the front page here has a 50 quickest.

jbiscuit
01-12-2011, 03:46 PM
scale of 1 to 5...5 is the best or something like that. So if a place is all 5s, that says a lot about the quality of wings. I would even make sure to start mentioning the digs too. If the the place is a dive but has great wings say so. Or include it in the rating or something. I know sometimes you mention it in the article but might be a nice thing to include everytime. I think you guys are doing great!

This is something that will be addressed entirely as the second part of the site re-do. But it won't happen for another month or so. Besides the visual over-haul that is coming very soon, the way the site works is changing completely.

The problem is, even though i have a bunch of guys that go with me, I'm the only one writing reviews.

Off the Clock is the Old Roberts, funny you guys bring this up yesterday I was at a customers house who is a really cool guy. We started talking about food and wings and he mentioned " Hey my buddy opened up a place " and its called Off the Clock. I won't drop any names but the guy who purchased it and apparently cooks owned a place that I Have had wings at, and those wings were AWESOME !!!

My boss also gives a thumbs up to off the Clock.....

I have to try it out personally :)

The morning constitution was completely normal. Not even a slight fire. Honestly, I think I was more effected by Mango Habenero the first time I had it.

QSTL's triple atomic is a far cry from the hottest thing I ever ate. I'd eat'em again. There's a descent flavor, not just pure burn.

That is a goal we're working towards. I mean considering we're working with a $0 budget (other then the $20,000+ worth of equipment we all own) and relying on our own talents, we'd love to see what we could come up with WITH a budget.

We have a full vid from Brew City Wingfest coming as well as a video from Summerfest. I got media credentials for us so we went in there with video cameras, mics on booms, and a whole crew. That was a lot of fun. we were in search of the "best Wing at Summerfest" and there was a clear winner.

You're review of the Boneyard Pub in Mukwonago was spot on. The place was better when it first opened. I used to love their Mango Habanero because it actually had a kick to it, now no kick or sense that habanero is in there. I tried the stupid hot and didn't think it was that bad for those 5-10 minutes. I live in Mukwonago and I won't even go there for wings anymore, I would rather drive to Quaker or BWW. Continue on the great work

One thing I do wish at this place and any other place would be a steady size of wings, sometimes there small sometimes there big. Consistency is what I want.
