View Full Version : 01 F150 throwing codes when it's cold out

I'm getting a p0171 and p0174 on my 01 F150 5.4 . This happened last winter too once the temps get cold the cel came on and stayed on till it got warmer like 40's out. The truck didn't seem to run any different last winter when it did it or this winter until now, today it developed a miss. I would think that if it was the O2 sensors or the MAF being dirty it wouldn't change with the temp of the outside air.

It does seem to be related to the outside air temp, has anyone had anything like this before?

Same is happening with my Ranger right now. No miss though. Runs just fine but the CEL came on when we first were in single digit temps. Fairly common on the Ranger forums.

its the sensors

What sensors? o2 sensors? MAF sensors? FCC Censors?

Here is the basic description of each code. I am going to assume its the o2 sensors but not positive.

P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 System Too Lean (Bank 2)

I understand what the codes mean, but from the ranger forums they point to the MAF being junky. I'd replace it but I'm not going to assume a VatoZone MAF will be any better. A lot of people have the same problem with the same era trucks (98-01).

What he said, which ones? If the O2's why does it only do it when its cold out.

Oh and apparently the stumble was a bit of an anomaly, its back to running fine. I cleared the code after I read it and it hasn't reset yet with my trip to Waukesha and back.
If it was something like an inlet temp sensor that would make more sense to me for it happening while it's cold out, regardless of engine temp.

Yeah, Ok Jer is right after digging deeper its all pointing at the MAF sensor and not the o2's like the other place I looked. Thinking back now my friends who live in Florida have a 95 4.6 v8 Cougar and they drove up for christmas a year or two back, and as soon as the car hit the cold weather the MAF sensor went nuts and ended up needing replacement. I have no idea what code or codes were getting thrown though.

I do have a can of MAF sensor cleaner laying in the garage if anybody wants to swing by, we can try cleaning it and clearing the codes to see if that takes care of it.

Well the wife came home with the truck today and it was running really shitty. I pulled the codes again and this time it was for a #7 misfire. I also noticed a ticking, and immediately thought of the fact I heard that a few days before the plug blew out of #3 before. So I start checking plug tightness, #7 was loose enough to spin it out with my fingers, and 2 others were just starting to get loose. Runs better now, going to clean the MAF tomorrow, I need to thaw out now.

Looks like I got lucky.
