My wife has a 2003 Mazda 6 that is getting older and needing random repairs as all cars do. So far it has really been a great car needing no major repairs, just an alternator and belt tensioner in over 120k miles. What really gets me though is that every time I do need to buy parts nobody stocks them and they are outrageously expensive.

For instance, right now I'm looking at replacing the brake master cylinder. It's non-ABS just a standard nor frills master cylinder that on any Big 3 car would cost $30 for a reman'd unit and I could walk in and get it from any parts store. Well for the 6 it's going to be at least 2 days to get one and Autozone is the cheapest at $60. Most places want around $100 and the delaer wants $234!!!!! FOR A BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER!! WTF??!?! Now I know dealers are always more expensive, particularly Mazda, but you have got to be high charging $234 for one of the simplest pieces on an automobile. It's like walking in to a fast food joint and having a cheesbuerger ring up for $50.

Any stealership parts department is gonna screw you over regardless of the make. There no reason to ever use them though as every make has web stores that sell OEM parts at discount prices. Of course, the parts stores like Autozone usually have aftermarket replacement for even less than the OEM stuff.

Mazda is a lot better than Ford (which owns a stake in Mazda and they share platforms) when it comes to availability of parts for older cars. I have a '91 Ford Escort GT (which is a Mazda Protege with a Ford body and interior) and Ford has discontinued many of the parts for the car whereas Mazda still sells them.

I find parts for my old mans 1993 Sable and my 1990 Ranger no problem, and are generally inexpensive :confused

Last week, my brakes on my 2002 avalon froze up and got stuck while I was down in chicago for school. Having few options I had it towed to a dealership down here and their replacing the master cylinder and brake booster for $1500 plus tax!!!

i work at a dealership, parts are rediculously priced before they hit the dealer shelves. I get parts at cost plus 10%, still rediculous. 240.00 for a drivers seatbelt?!

stuff like wheels and seatcovers are Vendor parts and are generally more expensive. A single 20 inch rim for an 07 ram costs more than an entire set including tires sells for on Ebay.

No $60 is reasonable, but Autozone is the only place that carries it for under $100, most are $140 including internet stores and we're talking for reman'd parts not new. By comparison it's only $30 for my 99 Tahoe. It just seems like every time I need parts for this car they are at least double what the same parts costs for most domestics and never in stock, which is the bigger problem.

My '94 Mustang Cobra Master Cylinder cost just under $150, if I remember correctly. Reman, from Advance. No abs, nothing fancy. Special order, took a week to get.

Price out a MC for a Turbo Gran Prix. Last I heard they were two-grandish.

that was just an example. I went thru the same thing trying to get a 20" spare for my ram. I got a set of Rims for an 07 for free, but didnt have a spare. wanted to buy one, was almost 400 bucks for a steelie. Called Jantz, was still over 100 bucks, then Cash For Clunkers happened and i got one for free!

20" spare = aluminum

tbss has factory 20" aluminum. Our spare is a 17" stamped steel wheel. The 17" stamped steel wheel from GM brand new is about $550 at employee pricing. Retail, I'm sure is WAY higher

Yup, buy a Camry. Made in America and unbelievably dependable. Year 2000 with 210,600 miles and I finally did my first non regular maintenance repair. It was a $20 blower motor resistor. Took 10 min to fix. :thumbsup
