Looking for some opinions about Anti-virus protection. I used the free PC Tools system in the past and it worked good until one got through aweek ago and I had to rebuild the computer. Now I bought a new computer and it came with a free Nortons system but was wondering what others use. Are the free ones worth it, which ones are good, or to stay away from? I used Nortons in the past and never had a virus get through to the extent the last one did. I know not all are perfect but was wondering what really works, free ones would be great.

I've been using Avast for a while. Seems to do a good job. It's free and no annoying advertising.

Microsoft has their Security Essentials out now if you have a valid copy of windows. Its free, and doesn't seem to take up a lot of resources. I use it on all of my machines. Read some of the reviews, they are pretty positive.

The best anti-virus is common sense... can't get a virus if you use that.

FYI that is mostly effective against spyware. It wont protect very well from actual viruses.

AVG and Avast both work great for free virus detection software.

True, but Spybot will detect viruses, I know I had a nasty Virtumonde virus not too long ago that Spybot couldn't wipe out. I eventually had to reinstall Internet Explorer. But it is free, and unless you download a lot of crap it'll keep the boogieman out of your computer.

ESET NOD32 is by far the best Anti Virus I have ever used. It uses very little resources and is insanely thorough. Updated all the time.

Sorry to hi jack the thread but being there are a few computer guys in here I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Bought my computer a few years ago and I never made the system restore discs. It use to have a pop up that would come up every so often asking if I wanted to make them. Not sure who but one of us must have said to not remind us anymore and it stopped. I still need to do this and can't find where I go to do it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
