Is it a same day pick up type thing or is there a waiting period? What's all required to get it? Where can I get it? Walmart even?

yep, wally world, gander mountain, cabella's and many other places will sell them to you. Go in, about 10 min later you're out with a license.

Planning on ice fishing?

What lake were you planning on hittin? I was out at Monona in Madison on New Years Eve for about 6 hours and between three of us we caught 48 blugills that were all keepers. Had a few small one that we threw back including a white bass.

When you say 48 gills what sizes were they ? 6" and up ?

Majority of them were atleast 7.5" although a couple probably could have been thrown back, but about ten of them were 8" or larger.
