View Full Version : AVATAR-First review

Went and saw the 3D version of AVATAR tonight.

First, the movie itself:

Meh? Not horrid...kind of enjoyable. Walked out liking it, despite the over-bearing environment-indigenous people-military yahoos-corporate greed overtones. Good action sequences, great scenery, story didn't get too bogged down with backstory's, etc.

There were some scenes that were bizarre...and some that were hokey. Fortunately those were few enough so as not to poison the movie as a whole.

BUT, is there any point to watching this w/o seeing it in 3D? In a word, no.

The 3D is amazing...the glasses are different than I've seen before...these aren't the red/blue, of course....but neither are they polarized. They are a light tint, and give a weird effect when you look at others with the glasses on...but I couldn't speak too much on what makes it tick.

The 3D itself IS amazing. Never seen effects come as far out, be as clear and sharp as these were. And unlike most movies where the effect was only for a couple scenes, this was throughout the movie, in virtually every scene.

Would I recommend the movie? Sure, but only in 3D.

Does that make this movie a "must see"? Not really...as a few movies are coming out afterward using the same tech/3D (alice in wonderland I believe, is one...and THAT movie will also benefit from it). So, you can wait.

Overall, fun...not the worst, not the best. Effects made it worthwhile.

despite the over-bearing environment-indigenous people-military yahoos-corporate greed overtones..

That almost killed the movie or me... Ok James Cameron I get it you think humans are ruining the earth.... But they kept beating that horse over and over and over and over.

The 3d was cool but added nothing to the movie IMO. After an hour I nearly forgot it was 3d @ all.

I give it a B- because of all the eco shit and it's a direct copy of Dances with Wolves.

James Cameron's finest work.

Just because a movie has a similar story doesn't take away from its story. Dances with Wolves was nothing but Pocahontas but it doesn't take away from Dances with Wolves.

I thought this was one of the most spectacular movie's I've ever seen. I say that with complete dedication. The 3D added so much to this movie. It made it an experience like non other that I've had at a movie theater or anywhere else for that matter.

IMO, ignore the hype. Ignore the negative. And go in with an open mind to see the movie. Don't listen to me or anyone else on the internet. If you let yourself enjoy the movie, you will.

This is the best review I've seen.

I'm going again to see it at the IMAX in 3D. Can't wait to see this again.

Because it'll be years before I can afford Sony's new 3D TV's coming out.

For all the hype, I have to say I have zero desire to see this. I'm numb to computer generated effects at this point. Unless it has a decent story to back up the effects I just can't seem to care. Give the technology another year and the Wayan's brothers will be using it in Scarey Move 65 and nobody will care.

I'd rather play a video game then watch it.

The story is very good. You're letting the fact that this movie is a the most technically advanced movie ever convince you that it can't also have a good story. IMO, that is just not true. If you like Danced With Wolves or Last Samurai story wise then you would also like this movie.

If you like beautiful movies set in exotic locales and seeing things your eyes have never seen, you'll like this movie.

If you like fantastic sci-fi films you'll like this movie.

Now if you said not to all those, then yeah, this isn't the movie for you.

I didn't like Dances with Wolves or the Last Samurai. Never liked the Smurfs either. lol

It just doesn't look interesting to me. Looks like a video game.

Although I admit when anything gets bashed into my head saying I have to see this, like the last 3 months of hype on this move, I tend to not want to see it. When Fox dedicated a whole episode of Bones to be an ad for the movie, that pretty much put me over the edge.

I just don't want to see movies turned into stuff like this where the entire movie is filmed on green screens. No more stunts, no real explosions, no real action. Just a large video game.

I liked Aliens (that's the 2nd one for people who don't know the sequence)because of the space Marines kicking bad alien ass. Somehow I think this movie would be the exact opposite of that, that somehow humans are going to be "the bad guys". True???

Sort of. Like I said, it's pretty much the same scenario as Dances With Wolves.

Where exactly does "most technologically advanced movie ever made" come from? Just looks like another over-cgi'd film.

It just doesn't look worth $10 to see.

It just doesn't look worth $10 to see.filmed in a new 3-D tech is the big thing...new motion capture is another. The CGI itself beyond the humanoid characters is also noticeably more realistic than I've seen before.

I seen it last night at Mayfair on the IMAX 3D screen. Movie was ok, effects were ok... overall it wasn't bad but it didn't really live up to the hype either. My suggestion is if your on the fence about seeing it, just wait for it to hit DVD.

I saw it a few days ago and I think it was awesome!

I figured that the enviro-hippy crowd would use it as propaganda in the future. Otherwise, it was very fun to watch. Lots of visual effect eye candy.

Anyone else think for a moment "is this some sort of weird nerd/scifi porn film? are they all running around naked?"

Looking at the film, I think the perception of the future was a bit off. It does not take the "singularity" into account (poindexter laugh).

BTW- it reminded me more of Ferngully. I was in the 2nd grade when that came out.

So I saw it again at the IMAX at Mayfair last night. God I just love this movie. i could have sat and watched it over again.

I wasn't impressed with the IMAX though. The screen isn't as big as I thought it would be. It's actually about the size of the Ultra Screen at the Majestic. It's not playing on the Ultrascreen there, but the screen it is on was only marginally smaller the this IMAX. But the seats are SOOOO much nicer at the Majestic that I would prefer to see movies there in 3D in the future.

Meh - it's a cool movie to watch in 3d. I thought it was incredibly predictable beyond the fact that within the first 5 minutes I was thinking about FernGully.

So I got home and went online and found this - apparently I wasn't alone..

It blew me away. Majestic in 3D. I sat in the 5th row from the front and when it told me to put on the 3d glasses I damn near shit. IMO it was very impressive. I loved the story and got everything I wanted from it.
